DAVIS, Calif. - Oregon State's Matt Ellis moved up a weight and earned his 12th straight victory as the Beavers completed their weekend trip to California by beating California-Davis 20-15 in Pacific-10 wrestling Saturday night at Hickey Gym. OSU's Jed Pennell also moved up a weight but saw his winning streak end at 11 as a result.
For Oregon State (10-6 overall, 6-2 Pacific-10), the shifts at four weight classes came as a result of 184-pounder Dan Pitsch being unable to wrestle. Pitsch hadn't felt well while wrestling at Stanford earlier in the day, where he won his 10th straight match, and wasn't able to compete when the Beavers arrived at UCD (5-6, 2-3).
"We were faced with a little adversity and I thought the guys handled it pretty well," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "They stepped it up. Matt (Ellis) didn't get a major this afternoon at 165 pounds, but he did tonight at 174."
Ellis, wrestling at 174 pounds for the first time in his Oregon State career, took a 15-6 major decision over the Aggies' Frank Richmond. Ellis improved to 23-6 this season; during his current win streak, he's scored team bonus points nine times.
Kyle Larson got things rolling for the Beavers, starting the meet with a 14-6 major decision over Shawn Haratini at 141 pounds. OSU's Tony Hook followed that with a 7-3 win over Kevin Jones at 149 pounds.
That's where the Beavers began shuffling the lineup, as Brian Duhrkoop moved into the 157-pound spot and took a 12-6 decision over Jeremiah Jarvis, who is ranked second in the Pac-10 at that weight. Duhrkoop, who hadn't wrestled in a dual since Jan. 11, nearly pinned Jarvis en route to the victory.
"That was a big win, to have 'Koop come out and put Jeremiah Jarvis on his back," Wells said. Orlando Perez moved up to 165 pounds and took UCD's Mike Font, ranked third in the Pac-10, to overtime before losing 8-6. Ellis then took his win at 174 pounds.
Pennell, wrestling at 184 pounds for the first time since last season, moved up to a meeting with Brandon Bear, the Pac-10's fourth-ranked 184-pounder, and Bear earned a 9-5 decision. Pennell is now 18-7 with six pins this season.
At heavyweight, Jamie Rakevich gave the Beavers a 20-9 lead when he pinned Dan Schon in 1:21. It was Rakevich's fourth pin of the year and his fifth win in his last six matches; he's 12-7 this season.
