STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon State 165-pounder Matt Ellis and 174-pounder Jed Pennell both won their 11th straight match and Beaver 184-pounder Dan Pitsch took his 10th in a row Saturday afternoon but OSU lost to Stanford 18-17 in Pacific-10 wrestling at Burnham Pavilion. OSU (9-6 overall, 5-2 Pacific-10) wrestles at California-Davis on Saturday night.
"It was back-and-forth and hotly contested," OSU head coach Joe Wells said of the dual against Stanford (7-4, 4-2). "We had so many opportunities to nail it down and secure the victory, and we let them slip away from us."
Oregon State led 17-9 with two matches to go, but the Beavers' Eric Stevenson was pinned late in the 125-pound match by Stanford's Tanner Gardner to put the outcome of the meet on the 133-pounders. The Cardinal's Paul Gross then gave Stanford its first-ever win over Oregon State with a 7-3 decision of Tim Norman.
The Beavers won just one of the first three matches, as OSU 149-pounder Tony Hook took a 12-4 major decision over Stanford's Luis Vendrell. After Oregon State's big three - Ellis, Pennell and Pitsch - all won, Beaver heavyweight Jamie Rakevich posted another major decision by beating Shawn Ritzenthaler 15-2.
"Tony Hook and Jamie Rakevich did real nice jobs as far as going out and scoring points, putting guys on their back and getting takedowns," Wells said.
