CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's swim team hosted its first home meet of the season Saturday with the Northwest Relays at the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis. Joining the Beavers for the relays meet was Pacific University along with the Corvallis Aquatic Team and the Hillsboro Heat Swim Team.
"The team swam really well today," Oregon State swimming head coach Larry Liebowitz said following the meet. "The progress that this team is making, as a team and working together, is primary for all of these early season meets and they're working well together. "
The meet format was a little bit different then the team is used to. Every event Saturday was a relay, 10 different events in all. The events ranged from a 100 yard freestyle relay in which each swimmer only swam one length of the pool, to the 500 yard freestyle crescendo relay in which the first swimmer swam 50 yards, the second swimmer swam 100 yards, the third swam 150 yards and the fourth swam 200 yards.
The Beavers swept all of the relays that they competed in and put up some good times for this point in the season. The team of Ashley Kerekanich, Keri Holmstrom, Arianna Gorenc and Ocean Trail led off the day with the 400 yard freestyle relay which they finished with a time of 3:36.93, three seconds off the best time of the season for the Beavers.
One of the more unique relays, other than the 500 yard crescendo relay, was the 400 yard medley relay which comprised of four swimmers each swimming a 100 yard individual medley. The team of Ivette Daily-Deaton, Crystall Kibby, Rachel O'Brien and Maggie Hanson won the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 4:09.92.
The newest member of the Oregon State swim team, Aya Fujimura, made her debut after being cleared to participate just this past Wednesday. She competed in the 200 yard butterfly relay as well as the 200 yard medley relay.
Men's swim teams from Pacific along with the Corvallis Aquatic Team and the Hillsboro Heat competed in the 10 different events as well.
"We had some great splits," Liebowitz said. "There were a lot of people that had smiles on their faces and they did a good job. I couldn't be happier with the progress that we're making. This is going to be a really solid team this year."
The Beavers next hit the pool when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif. to take on Pacific-10 Conference foe UCLA along with the University of California at Santa Barbara Oct. 23 starting at 12p.m.
