LINCOLN, Neb. - The 12th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team lost a back-and-forth battle to No. 15 Nebraska Saturday night, 17-16, at the NU Coliseum.
"This is a tough loss but we will learn from it with two big duals coming up on the road," Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky said. "This was as close a dual as you will see, with eight of the 10 bouts ending up as decisions. Each bout was a tough battle, and Nebraska had just enough to get the win."
Both teams won five bouts apiece, and four each by decision, but it was a technical fall by Nebraska's Jordan Burroughs at 165 pounds that turned out to be the point needed for the win. He defeated Jon Brascetta, 26-9.
The Beavers answered back with a major decision victory by Colby Covington over Caleb Kolb, 12-3, at 174 pounds, to put OSU up 16-14. The last bout of the night, featuring Brice Arand and Nebraska's Josh Ihnen, went to the Huskers by decision, 6-2, getting the three points necessary to overcome Oregon State's two-point lead.
The meet was a streaky one, with Nebraska winning the first two bouts, at 197 pounds and the heavyweight class, to take an early 6-0 lead. But the Beavers fought back with 12 straight points off four decisions.
Jason Lara led the four-bout streak with a 7-4 win over David Klingsheim at the 125-pound class. He then gave way to Kelly Kubec, who tied the overall score with a 5-3 decision victory over Nebraska's Ridge Kiley at 125 pounds.
Mike Mangrum (141 pounds) and Scott Sakaguchi (149 pounds) then pushed the Beavers to a six-point lead. Mangrum defeated Mike Koehnlein, 14-8, and Sakaguchi was victorious over Ross Grande, 6-2.
The Beavers streak ended at the 157-pound class when Alex Elder was downed by Cody Compton, 8-6.
Oregon State's loss is the team's first of the season and the Beavers stand at 3-1-2 on the year. Nebraska, meanwhile, improved to 6-2.
The Beavers are in action again Thursday night when visiting Wyoming in Casper. Oregon State then takes on Air Force Friday night in Colorado Springs, Colo. Make sure and visit osubeavers.com for updated info on the meets.
