COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five wrestlers tallied pins and nine of the 10 Beavers were victorious in 14th-ranked Oregon State's 42-3 victory over Air Force Friday night.
Kelly Kubec, Scott Sakaguchi, Colby Covington, Brice Arand and Clayton Jack each earned falls in Friday night's victory, which put the Beavers at 2-0 this week after defeating Wyoming, 20-15, on Thursday.
“This was naturally a good night for us,” Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky said. “We picked up some big wins and guys had a good night all the way around. This was a good week for us as we had to winter break.”
Arand (184) and Jack (heavyweight) each earned their pins in the first period; it was the second pin of the season for both wrestlers. Arand took his in 2:11 over Air Force's Joshua Mohr, and Jack capped off the night with a win in 1:56 over Jared Erickson.
For Jack, it was his 66th career win, most among active OSU wrestlers. It kept him one above Kubec (133 pounds), who picked up his 65th career dual win with the Beavers' first pin of the season, 4:24 over Tyler Untrauer. It was also Kubec's second fall of the year and he improved to 6-2 overall in duals this season.
Sakaguchi (149), OSU's fourth wrestler of the night, put the Beavers up 18-0 with his second fall of the season, which came in 6:20 over Air Force's Joshua Kreimier.
Last, but not least, of course, is Covington (174), who won his 24th career dual bout – in 25 attempts – by defeating the Falcons' Joseph Stafford in 6:35. Covington improved to 2-0 in pins this year, and 17-2 for his career, and pushed the Beavers' lead to 27-3, which officially gave the Beavers the win with three bouts remaining.
One of those three bouts was won by Taylor Johnson (197), who downed Air Force's Neil Delaney, 6-3, for the first victory of his career as an attached wrestler.
Mike Mangrum (141) improved his dual record to 4-0 this year with an 11-8 decision over Cole VonOhlen, which pushed the Beavers' lead to 12-0. That lead began when Jason Lara (125), earned an 11-5 decision over Gregory Rinker, giving him his 10th victory of the season. Lara is the first Beaver to reach double figures this season.
The win pushed Oregon State's record to 5-1-2 this season. The Beavers will now take a near two-week break before resuming competition Dec. 29 and 30 at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. Visit osubeavers.com for a preview and full recaps and results from the two-day championship.
