CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team played Seattle Pacific University to a scoreless draw Saturday night at Paul Lorenz field to open up its exhibition matches of the 2010 campaign.
The Beavers had their chances. They recorded 13 total shots as a team compared to just five by Seattle Pacific. SeniorTravis Sanchez and freshman Jonathan Chavez-Salceda each had four shots with two of Sanchez's coming on goal.
"It was good to see some of our younger guys get a lot of minutes," second year head coach Steve Simmons said following the match Friday night. "It was a good test for our guys both mentally and physically. We had our chances, again with a lot of new faces in there. I'm a little disappointed that we didn't take a couple of those chances. It's just going to take a few matches to work out the kinks."
Oregon State keeper Steve Spangler played all 90 minutes Friday night and made two saves. He made a diving save in the 81st minute of the match where it looked like the ball was going to squeak by but he dove to his right and stretched out as far as he could and corralled the ball before it could reach the goal.
"Our defense did really well," Simmons said. "We started Joachim Hansteen at center back and he did really well considering the change of pace in the college game to what he is used to in Norway. Jonathan (Chavez-Salceda) looked to be the freshman that looked like he had been there before. He really hit the ground running."
The Beavers are going to have to rely on their young players with 14 newcomers on the roster. They started three newcomers during Friday's match, though there were some returners who sat out for precautionary reasons.
"Portland at Portland is a fantastic test for us," Simmons said. "It's going to set us up for the big Mid-West trip. I'm really excited to have Portland back on the schedule and I know the guys are too."
Oregon State has one more exhibition match at the University of Portland Wednesday August 25 starting at 7 p.m. It opens up is regular season on the road against the University of Missouri at Kansas City Sept. 1. The Beavers then return home for their regular season home open when they face off with UC Davis in the Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
