
Beavers Rout Seattle U. 3-0 in Regular Season Opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team got off on the right foot Sunday afternoon when they defeated Seattle University 3-0 to open the 2010 season. Returner Chelsea Buckland and newcomers Jenna Richardson and Erin Uchacz scored for the Beavers at Championship Field in Seattle, Wash.
"The first half we played fairly well but we were not as sharp in some areas in the second half," head coach Linus Rhode said following the match. "Give credit to Seattle, they came out and played a strong second half. Even though we have some things that we need to get sorted out, it is good to know that with the people we have that we can always find a way to get the job done."
Buckland scored the first Oregon State goal of the 2010 season in the 36th minute on a pass from Jayne Eadie. Eadie passed the ball to Buckland on the right side and Buckland shot the ball to the far post to take a 1-0 Oregon State lead.
Oregon State had many chances to score in the game out shooting Seattle by a total of 16-10 with nine of the Beavers 16 shots coming on goal.
Senior Courtney Wetzel and Richardson both had three shots two coming on goal but it was Richardson who racked up the second goal of the day for Oregon State late in the second half. In the 85th minute, Richardson received the ball off of a deflection and chipped it over the Seattle goalkeeper Madison Goverde to increase the Beaver lead to 2-0.
Uchacz added a final insurance goal for the Beavers a little over four minutes later in the 89th minute when she followed a shot by Melinda Ingalls and punched it past Goverde.
"Everyone that came in for us in the second half did a very good job," Rhode said. "They are showing that they can play at this level and get the job done."
The Oregon State defense controlled the game only allowing two shots on goal that were both corralled by junior keeper Coleen Boyd. Boyd is coming off of a season in 2009 where she started 14 games for an overall record of 7-6-1 and a save percentage of .774.
"We have some time over the next week or so before our next match to find tune some things on offense and defense to get sharp for the remainder of the season," Rhode said.
The Beavers next challenge will be when the face Pacific at the University of Oregon Nike Tournament in Eugene, Ore. Friday, Sept. 3 starting at 4:30 p.m. Oregon State returns home for its 2010 regular season home opener against Portland State Friday, Sept. 10 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
