CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 18 Oregon State women's soccer team defeated Butler to improve its record 5-0 in the season with a win 3-0 Friday morning at Paul Lorenz Field
"We need to play at our level, while they were trying to play around us," freshman Jenna Richardson said. "Butler came in with the mindset that we were going to be a good team to beat. Butlers strategy, was to put one up front and stay in control of the ball, while we wanted to go up the field."
The Beavers (5-0 overall) only allowed 5 shots during the game with only one of the shots was on goal. Oregon State junior keeper Colleen Boyd is now 5-0 on the season with five straight shutouts.
"Mentally and psychically, the girls are in a good spot," Oregon State women's soccer head coach Linus Rhode said following the match. "They did what they needed to do to get the results. As a group, there is so much more that we can do. Overall, I am happy for us as a group, and we need to continue working and building as a team."
Oregon State recorded 19 shots during the game, while they kept both a competitive and aggressive approach to Butler.
The Beavers got on the board with Richardson's second goal of the season. She received the ball on a cross from Courtney Wetzel at midfield and put the ball past the goalie in the bottom left of the net.
Oregon State added another goal when Chelsea Buckland passed the ball to the middle of the filed for junior Melinda's fourth goal of the season.
Richardson recorded her first assist of the season when she set up Buckland for the Beaver's third and final goal of the game. It was Buckland's second goal of the season.
"We need to have more urgency, more rate on defense, and on offence we need to work quicker," Rhode said. "I know that we have more than what we showed today. Credit to the team is that they always find a way to get the result, and that is a good problem to have."
The Beavers return home Sunday, Sept. 19 to take on San Diego State at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free for fans. Those attending the match are encouraged to "Help Fight Hunger" by bringing a canned food item to donate to community outreach.
