CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 18 Oregon State women's soccer team's perfect record fell Sunday night at Paul Lorenz field in a 2-2 tie to the Aztecs from San Diego State in front of a home crowd of 713.
"It was a good game for us to play very physically," Oregon State women's head coach Linus Rhode said following the match Sunday night. "It was something we needed to get us in the right mode for Pac-10's."
The Beavers (5-0-1 overall) took the first lead of the game on Megan Miller's first goal of the season. Miller shot the ball from well outside of the box and curved it into the top right corner of the net past Aztec keeper Aubree Southwick giving the Beavers the 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
The Aztecs (2-5-3) tied the game three minutes later at 1-1 on a goal by Mechaela DeJesus, her second of the season. The goal is the first allowed by the Beavers this season. DeJesus added another goal to give the Aztecs the 2-1 lead.
Courtney Wetzel drove the ball towards the San Diego State net but it was blocked by the keeper but was unable to control the ball. Chelseas Buckland drove in what looked to be the equalizing goal but was called for being offsides negating the goal.
Buckland got her equalizing goal later in the game on a pass from Ashley Folsom that she took and drove the ball past the Aztec keeper into the lower left corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
The game remained tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation marking the first overtime game for the Beavers this season. The Beavers and the Aztecs each had their chances in both 10 minute overtime periods but neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Oregon State racked up a season high 28 shots with 18 of those coming on goal. Wetzel led the Beavers with seven total shots with six coming on goal. The second period saw 19 of their 28 shots for the game.
Buckland, Melinda Ingalls, and Ashley Folsom were all named to the all-tournament team following play Sunday.
"We showed a lot of character when we were able to come back and tie it," Rhode said. "There were a few chances where we could have put them away and unfortunately they didn't go in. Their goalie made some pretty good saves."
The Beavers hit the road again next week and take on UC Riverside and UC Irvine on Friday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 26 respectively in Irvine Calif. They do not return home until Friday, Oct. 15 when they host USC.
