CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team battled No. 11 Washington to the wire, coming up just short as the Huskies claimed a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.

Abby Smith scored the Oregon State goal, finding the net from the penalty spot in the second half. The tally was the Corvallis native's first as a Beaver.

Overall, the Beavers played a strong second half, very nearly earning a draw against a top-15 opponent after falling behind by two goals early in the match.

Washington opened the scoring early, finding the net less than three minutes into the contest. Oregon State had a chance to answer minutes later as Lea Gentry whipped a corner kick into a dangerous area, but the Beavers were unable to get on the end of it. The Huskies added a second in the 11^th minute.

Oregon State settled into the game in the later portion of the first half, creating a handful of scoring chances before heading to the break trailing 2-0.

The Huskies appeared to add a third in the 51^st minute, but a Beaver challenge resulted in the goal being ruled offside. Smith capitalized on some impressive Oregon State play, converting the spot kick as the Beavers cranked up the pressure on the Washington defense.

OSU continued to attack, as it controlled the bulk of the second half, but could not find an equalizer as the Huskies claimed the one-goal victory.

The Beavers will be back at Lorenz Field next weekend to take on Utah.
