GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Oregon State men's soccer team defeated the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay 2-1 Saturday night at Aldo Santaga Stadium in Green Bay, Wis. The Beavers improve their record to 2-0 on the young season.
"We're pretty pleased about the result on the road with a young team," Oregon State men's soccer head coach Steve Simmons said following the match. "Green Bay returned a lot of guys from their team last year that reached the tournament and our young guys well to the challenge that they presented."
The Beavers got on the board early in the first period when Brian Ramsey took a nicely played pass from Jonathan Chavez-Salceda and placed it in the back of the net. Ramsey is now the fourth Beaver to score a goal this season. It was Ramsey's first goal of the season and fourth of his career to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
Green Bay tied up the game a penalty kick in the 38th minute of the match. A Green Bay player was fouled just on the edge of the penalty box and was awarded the penalty kick. The goal evened the score going into the half.
It remained tied until Jake Parker crossed it to Alex Penny in text book fashion and Penny drove it in the back of the net to give the Beavers the 2-1 which ended up being the final.
"Green Bay put us under pressure early," Simmons Said. "Our guys did a good job at saying organized. Then bent but they didn't break. We did a good job at controlling the emotions of the game and our guys responded well after the penalty kick."
Beaver Keeper Steve Spangler recorded three saves while giving up the penalty kick goal and improves his record on the season to 2-0. Green Bay outshot the Beavers 19 to seven with only four of the 19 coming on goal.
Oregon State will stay out on the road and travel to DeKalb, Ill. where they will take on Northern Illinois Friday, Sept. 10 and then Northwestern on Sunday, Sept. 12.
