(2002—Junior)—James had a sensational regular season and was rewarded by being selected honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference...he also served as one of OSU's four team captains...he was a preseason Fred Biletnikoff Award candidate, which is given annually to the nation's top receiver...by virtue of catching 11 passes for 168 yards vs. Oregon, James eclipsed the OSU season record for pass receiving yardage...James caught 10 passes in the Insight Bowl vs. Pittsburgh for 165 yards and a touchdown...as a result, James wound up with 74 receptions for a school-record 1,284 yards and season-record 12 touchdowns...he passed Vern Burke for the record...Burke had 1,007 yards in 1962...James finished second on OSU's single-season receiving list with 74 catches, four behind Dave Montagne...he got his 2002 season off to a flying start by scoring OSU's first touchdown of the season, a 43-yard pass from Derek Anderson.(Eastern Kentucky)—James caught three passes for 73 yards (24.3 average) and one touchdown in the season opener, including the first touchdown of the year for the Beavers. (Washington)—James caught five passes for 138 yards, including a 60-yard TD pass and a 41-yarder...the 138 yards ranks as the 19th best single-game yardage game in OSU history. (Stanford)—James caught three passes for 87 yards (29.0 average), including a 46-yard TD pass to put OSU ahead to stay. (Oregon)—James had a sensational game against Oregon with a career-high 11 receptions (tied for second on single-game list) and 168 yards and a 40-yard touchdown...the 168 yards receiving is the fourth-best single-game mark in OSU history. (2000—Redshirt Freshman)—James participated in the final six games of the 2000 season, primarily on special teams…he had a few plays as a wide receiver…he caught his first collegiate pass (14 yards) in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame…James was under team suspension in the first three games of the season for disciplinary reasons…James spent the 1999 season rehabilitating his broken left leg...he was able to resume running during OSU's Oahu Bowl workouts...he was able to resume full workouts during winter conditioning and reported to spring drills as the No. 2 slot receiver...James had an encouraging spring practice and reported to fall camp as the No. 2 slot receiver behind Robert Prescott...in the four OSU scrimmages, James caught three passes for 15 yards in the first scrimmage...in the second scrimmage, James caught five passes for 63 yards...he caught three passes for 14 yards in the third scrimmage...in the Spring Game, James played for the Black squad and he did not catch a pass...in the spring scrimmage, he caught 11 passes for 92 yards...James recorded a 300-pound bench press mark in winter conditioning but was unable to perform the other lifts due to his leg injury.
(1999—Freshman)—James enrolled at OSU at the start of spring quarter and was able to participate in spring drills, with the opportunity to take five years to play four...as it turned out, James would need the redshirt year as he suffered a season-ending broken leg (left) in an automobile accident the weekend before OSU opened fall camp...the injury required a steel rod to be placed in his leg...displayed the ability to make sensational catches during spring drills, but he was not as consistent as he needed to be...in the Beavers' three major spring scrimmages, James caught two passes for 40 yards, including a touchdown and a 31-yard gain, at Roseburg on April 17...was blanked in April 24 scrimmage at Prothro Field...completed spring drills with a bang in the final spring game at Hillsboro on May 1, catching five passes for 83 yards, including a 24-yard scoring strike from Jonathan Smith, while playing on the Black squad...by enrolling at the start of spring quarter, James was only able to be tested on the bench press and lifted 271 pounds...his vertical jump best was 29.00 inches and he tested for only 8.04 percent body fat...James reported to fall camp listed No. 2 on the depth chart at flanker behind T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
(1998—Freshman)—James signed a letter of intent with OSU in February but did not enroll in school until the start of spring quarter in 1999.
EDISON HIGH SCHOOL, Stockton, CA—(1995-97)—James played for Edison High School Vikings and he ran the 40 in 4.41, which was the fastest time ran at the high school combine in San Jose, CA, in the summer of 1997...played for Coach Frank Carido...as a senior, he was a first-team all-league (San Joaquin Athletics Association)...James was the MVP of the SJAA league and a first-team San Joaquin all-area selection...also named the MVP of the Stockton Hall of Fame Lineman award...he was a two-year basketball starter and was all-area and all-league as a junior...James was named a first-team All-American Grid-Hoop player by Student Sports Magazine as a combination football-basketball player...earned three letters in football and was a two-year starting wide receiver...caught 10 passes for 200 yards (20.0 avg.) and one touchdown as a sophomore...caught 35 passes for 538 yards (15.4 avg.) and seven touchdowns with a long of 80 yards his junior year...as a senior, he caught 52 passes for 952 yards (18.3 average) and 12 touchdowns and a long of 79 yards on a team that had its first winning season since 1983...Edison was 6-4 during the 1997 season...scored a total of 96 points as a senior...played cornerback on defense and returned one of his five interceptions for a touchdown and also returned a fumble for a touchdown...coach Carido said, “I have coached 27 years and I would rank him as one of the top five athletes that I have ever coached, and that includes five players who have played in the NFL--Vince Ferragamo, Freeman McNeil, Frank Manumaleuna, Eric Williams and Danny Reece. James is definitely a big time player who will be an impact player.”
