PERSONAL—Born 8/3/80 in Olympia, WA...son of Fred and Elsa Tobey...his father is a transportation supervisor and his mother is a secretary...has a younger brother, Allyn, 20...Carl is married and to the former Annalee Nelson...the couple got married in June 2001...he is in the College of Health & Human Services and is an exercise & sport science major...entered OSU with a 3.47 GPA...enjoys water sports and collecting cars...his top athletic thrills as a prep were playing in Australia and booting three punts of 67 yards or more...selected OSU because, “My family attended OSU and it is a chance to play Division IA football.”
OSU—(2003—Senior)—Carl heads into his senior year firmly entrenched as the Beavers' punter...the 2003 season will mark his third straight season as OSU's punter...he has started 24 straight games... in two years, he punted 142 times and averaged 39.8 yards per punt...he has a strong leg and he improved his ability to get the ball off quickly during the spring, while working with new special teams coach LeCharls McDaniel...at the end of spring drills, Carl was kicking better than any time in his career to date at OSU...he should be a very potent weapon in OSU's special teams play this fall...Carl has posted weightlifting bests of 345 in the back squat, 275 in the bench press, 259 in the power clean and 270.1 in the push press...he has top vertical jump mark of 25.5 inches and he has a 4.85 time in the 40.
(2002—Junior)—Carl, who originally joined the Beavers as a walk-on, was put on scholarship for the 2002 season...he has been the Beavers' starting punter as a sophomore and junior...Carl averaged 40.3 yards on 74 punts for OSU with a long of 63 yards against USC, which tied for the 17th-longest punt in Beaver history...Carl had 18 of his punts downed inside the 20 and opponents signaled for fair catches on 14 punts...Carl ranked sixth in the Pac-10 with his punting average and 56th nationally...during winter conditioning, Carl posted weightlifting bests of 315 in the back squat, 235 in the bench press, 237 in the power clean and 165 in the push press...his top vertical jump mark was 24.5 inches.
(2001—Sophomore)—After spending two years in the program, Carl got his opportunity in fall camp to win the No. 1 punting job…Carl, a walk-on, was the No. 1 punter during spring drills and averaged 44.2 yards on five punts during the Spring Game…when fall camp opened, Carl once again laid claim to the No. 1 punting job...he was OSU's starting punter the entire season...he punted 68 times for an average of 39.2 per game with a long of 60 yards...he ranked sixth in the Pacific-10 Conference...Carl averaged over 40 yards a punt in five games during the season...he booted a 60-yarder (his longest) against UCLA and had a 59-yard punt at USC...14 of his punts were downed inside the 20 yard line...in the winter program, Carl posted lifting bests of 240 in the bench press, 231.5 in the power clean and 310 in the squat.
(2000—Redshirt Freshman)—Carl spent the 2000 season as the backup punter to Mike Fessler, but he did not get into a game…Carl entered spring drills as the No. 3 punter on the squad and he improved his status with his punting work in the four scrimmages...he reported to fall camp in August as the backup punter to Fessler, a three-year starter... posted weightlifting bests of 285 in the back squat, 240 in the bench press and 214 in the power clean during the winter conditioning program.
(1999—Freshman)—Joined the Oregon State program at the start of fall camp as a walk-on and spent the season as a redshirt punter.
ADNA HIGH SCHOOL, Chehalis, WA—(1995-99)—Carl earned four letters in football, two in basketball, three in baseball and one in track and field...Carl was a three-year starter in football, playing tight end, defensive end, punter and place kicker...he was a two-time all-league selection at tight end and a two-time all-area selection...had a 67 and 57 yard punt in a playoff game during his junior year...team captain his senior year...played in the Down Under Bowl following his senior year...played football for Coach Gary Reboin...played center on the basketball team and was a pitcher and first baseman in baseball.
