Oregon State vs. Howard
December 15, 2011
Gill Coliseum
Corvallis, Ore.
Team Notes
With an 8-2 record, Oregon State is off to its best start in 14 years. It's just the fourth time since the 1984-85 team opened 15-1 that a Beavers team won eight of their first 10 games (1986-87, 1989-90 and 1997-98).
The Beavers have won games by 42 (95-53 vs. UIC), 33 (93-60 vs. West Alabama), 25 (71-46 vs. Montana), 24 (86-62 vs. CSU Bakersfield), 21 (93-72 vs. Howard) and 20 (66-46 at Towson) this season.
Oregon State is now 6-0 this season and 15-1 all-time under Coach Robinson when scoring 80 or more points. The Beavers scored 80+ in a game seven times last season; once in 2009-10; and twice in 2008-09.
The Beavers have been ahead by double-digits at halftime in five of their 10 games this season.
Until a pair of Howard fast break layups in the final 1:30 of the game, Oregon State had held opponents without any fast break points in the past 78 minutes and 30 seconds of action. The Beavers outscored Howard 10-4 on the break tonight and held a 16-0 advantage in their last game against Illinois-Chicago in that category. On the season, Oregon State has outscored its opponents 101-28 on the break.
Oregon State reached the 90-point plateau for the second consecutive game, which hasn't happened since the Beavers defeated Chico State (92-48) and South Carolina State (92-57) in the first two contests of the 1999-2000 season.
The Beavers have now scored 90 or more points four times this season. The last time they accomplished that feat was during the 1991-92 season when they reached that mark five times in 31 total games.
Oregon State had only scored 90 or more points twice in the past six seasons before this year.
With Ahmad Starks (22), Angus Brandt (21) and Roberto Nelson (20) all scoring 20 points, the Beavers had three players reach that mark for the first time since a 98-87 win against Colorado on Dec. 4, 2004 with Sasa Cuic (22), Chris Stephens (27) and Jason Fontenet (20) all hitting that number.
Oregon State outscored Howard in the paint by a 38-22 margin. They have bested their opponent down low in nine of 10 games this season.
