LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Jenna Richardson scored the game winning goal in overtime against the USC Trojans to improve their record to 8-2-1 Friday. This was Richardson's fourth goal of the season and second game winning goal.
“It is really good to see Jenna score,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “She has been working hard and she has had an ankle injury for two weeks now, so she has been fighting to get back from that. So to see her come out and play the way she did today was great. I was happy for her and for the team.”
Richardson found the back of the net for the Beavers in the 95th minute of the game in the first overtime period. Melinda Ingalls won the ball in the midfield and Richardson opened up a space for Ingalls to play the ball through to her and she took it into the 18-yard box and finished it past the keeper.
Oregon State outshot the Trojans 5-4 in the first half. One of the best scoring opportunities in the first half for the Beavers was when Justyne Freud sent a rocket of a shot at the Trojan goal, but hit the crossbar in the 32nd minute.
The Trojans put the pressure on the Beaver defense, but goalkeeper Colleen Boyd came up strong and kept the score tied 0-0 going into halftime. Boyd came away with three saves in the first half.
The second half was a physical battle that saw four total yellow cards come out and ten fouls. Freud almost had another opportunity to put the Beavers in the lead when she hit the crossbar again in the 54th minute. With time ticking down, Richardson also almost put a point on the scoreboard, but the Beavers hit the crossbar again in the 82nd minute.
“The game was very physical,” Rhode said. “There wasn't a lot of rhythm in the game, so there was a lot of physical play. I thought our girls did well the first half, but we started a little flat at the beginning of the second half and then we picked it up again for the later part of the second half. Our energy and commitment went up, and once that happened we took over the game and started creating a lot of chances.”
The Beavers return to action Sunday Oct. 2 when they take on UCLA in a top-25 battle at 12:00 p.m. in Los Angeles, Calif.
