Oregon State at Arizona State
January 14, 2012
Wells Fargo Arena
Tempe, Ariz.
Head Coach Craig Robinson
On Arizona State's run in the second half...
"I thought the way we handled their defense in the second half is that we stopped what we were doing in the second part of the second half. We were really attacking it and really moving the ball and we got satisfied with that. Secondly, we couldn't find their shooters in the second half. We did a good job in the second half of that first half so I was really disappointed with that. We need to go back to work and figure out how to prevent that."
On the defense in the first half to take the lead at halftime...
"That was exactly how we play defense typically and to see us not be able to carry it through at the most important part of the game is something I have to address with the team when we get back and figure out what the heck is going on. Because that was the first time where I felt like we weren't the typical Oregon State that we have been all year."
On being cold on offense during different times in the game...
"They were hot and we went cold but if you want to be in a good team you make more than the shots that we made. I'm not going to say you have to make all of them. But you have to make more."
On being better than the record shows and what needs to be done...
"We are just going to go back to the fundamentals and start from scratch and remind ourselves how we got to where we were before the conference started."
On certain stretches when the shots aren't falling against Arizona and Arizona State...
"I watched our guys in practice and they are doing every hard and everything they are supposed to do. In the shoot-around everything looked fine, but I think it might just the pressure of trying to win the first (conference) game on the road. That is palpable but that is something you have to deal with. If you want to be a good team in the league, you have to be able to win on the road."
On returning home for two games...
"We are hoping that helps us. But no matter of home cooking is going to help a defensive performance like we had out there. We have to be better and that's what we are going to be focused on is getting better."
Sophomore guard Roberto Nelson
On the start of the second half when ASU went on a run...
"They hit the open guys and those shots they were shooting were going in. We let a couple get away and they got momentum and started building on it and their lead started getting away from us."
On how the team has been shooting the past couple of games...
"We are kind of in a little slump right now. We know what we are capable of and we just need to make sure we are building on our momentum when we get our little spurts in the game. Other teams are doing a good job of finding our shooters and making it tough for us. At the same time, we need to do what we need to do to get up shots."
On how the team is doing mentally knowing they are a better team than the record shows...
"The record definitely doesn't show what kind of team we are. But we can use it as motivation going into the next game. We know we aren't a 1-5 team. We know we should be up there at the top so we need to do and go back to the drawing board and try to rethink and redo our strategy for the next game."
On working on a starting a winning streak...
"It's definitely a motivation. We just need to make sure that we are doing all of the right things. Right now we have to go to practice and go in there with our heads up and not get too down on ourselves and try to take it out on the next game. Offensively and defensively, we need to do the right things and make sure we are in the right spots so that their shooters aren't getting wide open shots like they have been and we need to make our wide open shots."
On returning to Gill Coliseum...
"We have a great crowd at Gill. The fans come out and support us and give us a lot of momentum when we are trying to put teams away. We always play better at home."
Sophomore forward Devon Collier
On how the team is doing mentally right now after the 0-2 road trip...
"We just need to go back to the gym and work hard and watch tapes to see what we need to work on and see what we need to improve on. We need to get back to work."
On being a better team than the record shows...
"We are a better team. We need to watch some tape and see what we are messing up on and see what we aren't executing on and try to make things better after that and keep moving forward."
On the pressure of trying to win a conference road game...
"There isn't pressure. We just need to keep working hard and go back to what we used to do and get back to our basics. We have two home games coming up and we just need to get these two wins."
