Harrison's Win, Kibby's Trio of Top-Five's Highlight Swimming's Opener

WESTWOOD, Calif. - Freshman Sammy Harrison won her first career race and junior Crystal Kibby claimed three top-five finishes to pace the Oregon State swim team at UCLA on Friday afternoon. The Beavers lost, however, to UCLA, 197-92; to Utah, 166-117; and to UC Santa Barbara, 195-98.
Harrison's win came in the in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:57.47. She also claimed third place in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:12.46) and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.95).
Kibby's season got off to an impressive start with her three top-fives. She claimed two second-place finishes, coming in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.55) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.52). She also swam to a fourth-place spot in the 200-yard IM (2:08.71).
"Even though we lost I was proud of the way we swam," said OSU Head Coach Larry Liebowitz. "We were really aggressive in the water."
Another Beaver bright spot in the water Friday was junior Aya Fujimura who claimed two top-five finishes in both the 200 and 100 fly. Fujimura finished fourth in the 100 with a time of 57:00, while claiming the fifth spot with a 2:04.99 performance in the 200.
As a team OSU earned another top-five finish as its 400 freestyle relay team of Erica Brannon, Margo Clinton, Maggie Hanson and Amanda Rose finished in fifth place with a time of 3:38.21.
Oregon State now 0-3 on the year will travel back to Corvallis where it will host the Alumni Relays, Oct. 20, and then Boise State in its first home meet of the season. The Broncos and Beavers are set to square off in the pool on Saturday, Nov. 3 inside Dixon Recreation Center.
