SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State track and field team finished competition at the Husky Classic coming away with personal bests and school records for the second meet in a row.
Laura Carlyle has now broken her own school record in the mile twice this season. She finished the mile today with a time of 4:41.61, beating the school record of 4:46.92 that she set at the Husky Invitational just two weekends ago. She also held the school record before the season started with her time of 4:50.90 set in 2010.
“She is a pleasure to watch race and she was in a race today with a girl that ran the fastest time in the world this year,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “She ran in the biggest race of her career. She didn't panic; she ran well and dropped her personal best by five seconds. She is gaining a lot of confidence and I am just really proud of her.”
The freshman class had a strong showing at the Husky Classic with Aly Nielson and Lacey London highlighting the group. Nielson's first performance in an Oregon State track uniform was impressive when she turned in a ninth place finish in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:13.10, which was the fastest time in that event for the Beavers today.
London competed in the mile run for the second meet in a row, placing second in section one with a time of 5:04.64. She improved her time from the Husky Invitational, a 5:12.14, by more than eight seconds.
“Aly came out and raced for the first time indoors and did a tremendous job,” Sullivan said. “Lacey ran eight seconds faster than she did two weeks ago and moved her into eighth all-time indoors now at Oregon State.”
Another standout performance included Sabrah de Voir's time of 10:35.64 in the 3,000 meter run. She set a personal best with that time beating her previous time of 10:47.19 by more than 12 seconds.
Kenyan Parker and Malcolm Marble both competed in the men's 60 meter dash for their first time on the track for Oregon State. Parker placed first in his heat during the preliminaries with a time of 6.91 qualifying him for the finals. He finished fifth in section two of the finals with a time of 6.88.
Obum Gwacham competed in the men's high jump finishing third in section two with a jump of 6-11.50. Kristen Oenning and Rylee Marshall competed in the high jump on the women's side finishing with jumps of 5-3.25 and 4-10, respectively.
The Beavers will return to action March 3 when they head back to Seattle for the third time to compete at the University of Washington Last Chance Meet. It will be the last opportunity for athletes to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships set for March 10.
