PERSONAL—(Pronounced Kuh-NECK-ah-burg) Born 9/2/81 in Everett, WA...son of Randy Kanekeberg and Barb Brown...his father is self-employed and his mother works for White Hall Jewelers...has one younger sister, Terra, 12...he is currently enrolled in the UESP program and has not declared a major…Mark Brunell and Vince Carter are his favorite athletes...playing football in the Kingdome and baseball in Safeco Field were his top prep athletic thrills...selected OSU because, “It is a program on the rise and has great coaches and facilities.”
(2002—Sophomore)—Ryan has yet to play in a game for Oregon State, but he took a step closer during spring drills of seeing the playing field this fall...he opened the spring listed No. 4 on the depth chart at quarterback, but finished the spring a strong No. 3, and not far behind No. 2 Adam Rothenfluh...in the first spring scrimmage, Ryan completed 6-of-15 passes for 40 yards...in the second scrimmage, he completed 10-of-20 for 108 yards and looked very sharp...in the Spring Game, Ryan was 4-of-6 for 70 yards for the winning Black squad...he played much of the second half for the Black...Ryan showed marked improvement during the spring and put himself into definite contention for a backup role...during the winter program, Ryan posted weightlifting bests of 385 in the back squat, 265 in the bench press, 264 in the power clean and 231 in the push press...his top vertical jump mark was 32 inches.
(2001—Freshman Redshirt)—Ryan spent the 2001 season as OSU's No. 4 quarterback and spent the season on the scout squad, first at quarterback and later at free safety...he did not get into a game...Ryan was in a battle the entire spring with Adam Rothenfluh, Nick Stremick and Shayne House to earn the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Jonathan Smith…Ryan had a good day in OSU's initial spring scrimmage, completing 5-of-9 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown…he was only 5-of-11 for 45 yards in scrimmage No. 2…in the spring game, Ryan spent time on both teams…he completed 3-of-6 passes for 51 yards for the winning Black squad and 6-of -2 passes for 59 yards for the White squad…hel reported to fall camp listed No. 3 in the depth chart and will continue the battle with five other quarterbacks for the backup spot to Smith…Ryan posted winter weightlifting bests of 265 in the bench press, 242.5 in the power clean 350 in the squat.
(2000—Freshman)—Ryan spent the 2000 season playing as a scout team quarterback and redshirting.
KAMIAK HIGH SCHOOL, Mukilteo, WA –(1997-00)—Quarterbacked the Kamiak High School Knights to the quarterfinals of the state Class 4A playoffs in 1999...played for Coach Dan Mack...ran 4.6 in 40 in high school...threw for 1,450 yards and 16 touchdowns in regular season and wasn't intercepted until the final regular season game...he added two more touchdown passes in the playoffs before being forced out of the game in a quarterfinal loss to Kentwood High School with an injured finger...completed 133 of 234 passes (.568 percentage) with 18 touchdowns and only two interceptions...he had 1,707 yards passing...compiled 4,424 yards passing and completed 319 passes in his prep career with a .580 completion percentage and 36 touchdowns in three years as starting quarterback...threw for over 1,500 yards as a junior with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions...threw for over 1,100 yards as a sophomore with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions...he had some outstanding individual games as a senior, including completing 11 of 19 passes for 209 yards and five touchdowns in one half vs. Shorecrest High School...he completed 25 of 35 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns vs. Hazen High School and he completed 25 of 36 passes vs. Sedro Wooley High School for 239 yards and two touchdowns...dubbed “Special K” at Kamiak High School...visited Washington State, San Diego State and Idaho...also recruited by USC and Washington...teammate of OSU tight end Pat Loney at Kamiak High School...ranked as the 19th best athlete in the State of Washington by SuperPrep in the publication's January 2000 All-America issue...a three-year letterman and starter at quarterback...earned four letters as a pitcher in baseball...earned two letters in basketball, playing only as a sophomore and junior...averaged 12 points a game as a junior...was selected to play in the Washington East-West All-Star football game, played on June 30, 2000 at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane...his coach, Dan Mack, coached the West team...he completed 12 of 15 passes for 138 yards and an interception as his West team won 34-16...earned first-team All-State honors, first team all-area and all-area Player of the Year as a senior...he was a two-time all-league (Western Conference)... “He throws the ball over 90 miles an hour as a pitcher and will be drafted by baseball,” said Coach Mack. “He is one of the best quarterbacks I have ever coached, and that includes Shane Fortney, who played at Washington. I think he is one of the best quarterbacks to come out of the Western Conference since Chris Chandler. He has a major league arm and is very accurate. He will really open some eyes. The only time he was intercepted during the regular season was in the last game and he was attempting to throw it away. People in Oregon will fall in love with these two guys (Kanekeberg and Loney).”...Ryan was drafted in the 24th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher following his senior year, but elected to attend Oregon State rather than sign a professional baseball contract.
