BERKELEY, Calif. - Four Oregon State players scored in double-figures and the Beavers (15-12, 5-10 Pac-12) rallied back from an early deficit to take the halftime lead, but California (22-6, 12-3) used the energy of its raucous crowd of 11,331 to win 77-63 on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.
"I was really disappointed," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "We knew it was going to be a high intensity game because it was senior day, and I didn't think we came out with the effort that matched their intensity. We fought our way back, and then just got back in to the same cycle. It was the guys at the end of the bench that brought us back. I put the starting guys back in; your best players have to help you in situations like that."
Devon Collier and Roberto Nelson each had a team-high 14 points and Collier tied a career-high with 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, while Angus Brandt added 11 points and seven rebounds and Jared Cunningham had 10 points for the 19th consecutive game in double-digits.
"It is definitely impacting us a little bit," Nelson said about the losses. "We take losses tough there. Everybody is extremely competitive. We know we have to go back on Monday - or whatever day we have practice - and give it our all to get a win."
After an emotional Senior Day presentation for Jorge Gutierrez and Harper Kamp, Cal exploded out to a 16-4 lead behind an energetic crowd before the Beavers responded with an 8-0 run to get back in the game and a 15-4 overall run to pull within one at 20-19.
Oregon State tied the game 30-30 on a tip in by Brandt after a miss by Nelson and took the lead at halftime, 34-32, when Brandt found a wide-open Kevin McShane under the basket for a powerful two-handed stuff.
The teams fought back and forth in the second half and McShane cut Cal's lead to 44-43 with 15:18 to play on a layup, but the Golden Bears went on a 15-4 run over the next six minutes to lead 59-47. The Beavers pulled within 62-56 on a three-pointer by Cunningham but Cal went on another run, this time 12-2, to lead 74-58 and cruise to the victory.
"We would get stops and wouldn't come up with the rebound or loose ball," Robinson said. "Of late, it has been a problem. I've got to address that. We've got three home games, which are all potentially winnable games. We have to rise to the occasion to salvage some of this conference season."
All five California starters scored in double-figures, led by David Kravish and Gutierrez with 17 points apiece. Allen Crabbe had 16, Kamp added 13 and Justin Cobbs finished with 10 points and 13 assists.
Oregon State returns home to play the Oregon Ducks in the 337th Civil War Series presented by the Northwest Ford Dealers and PacificSource Health Plan at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26.
