FULLERTON, Calif. - Led by freshman Sammy Jo Prudhomme's 13 saves, the Oregon State women's soccer team remained undefeated by edging Cal State Fullerton 2-1, Thursday night in the Golden State. The Beavers, ranked 21st/23rd in the nation scored in the match's 88th minute on a goal by redshirt sophomore Marissa Kovac to improve to 4-0 on the season. It was the second straight match Linus Rhode's crew fell behind 1-0 only to score two unanswered goals to secure a victory. With the defeat, the Titans fell to 1-4 on the year.
Prudhomme starting in her first collegiate match would be tested early by CSF strikers as she saved two shots within the contest's first eight minutes. The Titans would get a ball past the freshman goal keeper though as forward Stacey Fox put one into the net off a rebound from Prudhomme's second save. The goal came in the eighth minute and gave Cal State Fullerton a 1-0 lead.
That slim margin would not last for long as junior captain Jacy Drobney picked up her team with her second goal of the season, less than ten minutes later. The tying score came at the top of the box in the 16th minute on a cross by senior midfielder Brandi Dawson, who was credited with the assist.
Following her team's first score, Prudhomme would be tested three more times in the first half, stopping the ball each of those chances for a total of five saves during her first 45-minutes in goal.
The Titans came out firing in the second half, giving the freshman a total of eight shots on goal in the match's second half. Fortunately Prudhomme stood her ground, swatting away each one that came toward her for a baker's dozen worth of saves in only her first collegiate outing.
The first-time starter's play in goal enabled OSU to have a chance late to put the ball in the net and that's exactly what Kovac did with just two minutes remaining in regulation. A cross by redshirt sophomore Brittney Oljar bounced off of a couple of bodies and Kovac was able to capitalize for the winning score.
The undefeated Beavers will have a quick turnaround for their next contest as they return to Corvallis to host UC Irvine on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Lorenz Field.
POST MATCH QUOTES
OSU Head Coach Linus Rhode
On his team's performance...
"It was a hard fought victory without a doubt, but it wasn't our best performance by any means. We started the game slow and we could not get into the flow of it."
On goalie Sammy Jo Prudhomme's performance in her first collegiate match...
"She was outstanding tonight. She had come up with three or four outstanding saves that I would call legitimate chances. Some of the other ones were a little more routine for her because they were from distance but she was without a doubt our best player of the night."
On his team's second half surge...
"We definitely have a lot of character to keep fighting but there are some things we need to work on that would make our matches a lot easier for us."
On the game winning goal...
"It was a good little build up and was one of the few times we strung some passes together. It was a great service into the box and we finished it off really nicely."
