CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite junior goalie Audrey Bernier-Larose's career high six-saves, the Oregon State women's soccer team lost its first match of the season Sunday, falling to UC Irvine 1-0 at Lorenz Field. The Beavers, now 4-1-0 were out shot by the Anteaters 10-5 and mustered just three shots on goal during the contest. With the victory, Irvine improved their record to 2-4-0.
The lone goal of the match came just before the eight minute mark when UCI forward Laura McGraill fired a shot from just outside the right portion of the 18-yard box, which sailed over the outstretched arms of Bernier-Larose into the top left corner of the goal. It was only the junior keeper's second goal allowed this season in 360-minutes of play at the position.
With the early goal, UC Irvine claimed a 1-0 lead and was able to maintain that slim advantage going into the half, despite two shots on goal by OSU strikers. One of those shots was by junior forward Jenna Richardson who returned from playing in Japan during the FIFA U-20 Women's World cup to take the field with her teammates for the first time in 2012.
The prior two contests, Head Coach Linus Rhode's crew had fallen behind 1-0, only to comeback in the second half to claim 2-1 victories. Unfortunately that trend would not continue Sunday, as the Beavers fired just one-more shot toward Anteater goalie Jennifer Randazzo's direction in the second half. Bernier-Larose stood her ground during the final 45-minutes as well, making four of her career high six saves during that time frame.
Oregon State now has four days to rest and recover before heading south to take on UC Santa Barbara on Friday and then Cal Poly, Sunday.
POST MATCH QUOTES
OSU Head Coach Linus Rhode
On his team's play Sunday against UC Irvine…
“It was an unfortunate goal that we gave up but what we can take away (from the loss) is that we definitely need a little bit more urgency and quality in the attack.”
On junior forward Jenna Richardson's return to the team…
“I think it is nice to have her back but she still has to work her way back into things and get used to how we're trying to play.”
On not being able to come back from a 1-0 deficit, after accomplishing the feat in the two prior matches…
“I think in the last few (matches) we were able to come back and get a few wins with late goals. Today we were not able to do that and we were not able to get back in and create the opportunities that we needed.”
On what his team will be working on before their next set of matches…
“We are going to work on some attacking things but we are also going to work on some competitive situations in the midfield, how we deal with those and are able to solve some of those issues.”
Junior forward Jenna Richardson
On her return to the team…
“It is always difficult to adapt, even with an old team but I think it won't take long. Even today with most of the plays, the ideas were there, it was just a matter of timing. With a couple practices I don't think it should be a problem.”
On her team's first defeat of the season…
“I think a lot of the things everyone was trying to do weren't really going as planned but hopefully we learn from that and can move forward and get a 'W' again.”
