Prudhomme collects a dozen saves in the loss while Dawson scores her second goal of the season
BERKELEY, Calif. – Despite freshman goalie Sammy Jo Prudhomme's 12 saves, the Oregon State women's soccer team could not get past the pesky California defense Sunday as the Beavers fell to the Golden Bears 3-1. Prudhomme's dozen stops were just one shy of her career high and marked the second time this season she eclipsed the double-digit saves plateau. With the loss OSU dropped to 9-3-0 on the season and 1-2 in Pac-12 play, while Cal improved to the same 9-3-0 mark and 2-1 within the conference.
The Golden Bears were the first to score on the afternoon, when in the 13th minute forward Ifeoma Onumonu sneaked a shot past Prudhomme from just outside of the box for the early 1-0 Cal lead. After the early score, both teams took turns trading shots, with Oregon State sending four toward the California goal in the first half and the Bears firing off a dozen in Prudhomme's direction.
Coming out of the half, Cal added to their slim margin off of a corner kick in the 63rd minute when forward Rachel Mercik put the ball past Prudhomme off of a rebound from teammate Emi Lawson's header inside the box. The Golden Bears tallied another score nearly 15 minutes later, which made it a three goal deficit for head coach Linus Rhode and his Beavers with just three and a half left to play.
Refusing to yield to the Cal defense, junior Brandi Dawson gave her team its first goal of the game as she fired a shot to the right side of the goal which slipped past Cal keeper Emily Kruger. It was the OSU midfielder's second goal of the season, ensuring that the Beavers would not be shut out for their seventh straight match.
Leading the way for Oregon State on the offensive side of play were Megan Miller and Brittany Oljar, who both collected two shots against the Cal defense. The pair each had one shot on goal in the contest to go along with Dawson's lone score.
OSU will have a little less than a week to rest and regroup before welcoming in USC and UCLA next weekend to Lorenz Field. The 'Beavs take on the Trojans Friday at 1 p.m. and then the Bruins at 12 p.m., Sunday. Both matches will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
