CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ali Gibson and Jamie Weisner each had 14 points, Samantha Siegner chipped in 10 of her own and the Oregon State women's basketball team put the clamps on Oregon defensively en route to a 68-49 Civil War win over the Ducks in Gill Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Beavers swept the season series against Oregon (2-12, 0-6 Pac-12) for the second consecutive year and have now won the last five games against the Ducks. OSU also got back to .500 and owns a 9-9 overall record, with a 3-3 mark in Pac-12 play.
Just as in the first installment of the Civil War on Tuesday night in Eugene, the Beavers came out on fire. Oregon State scored the game's first 11 points and held the Ducks without a point for the first five minutes. Gibson opened up the action with a three, ShaKiana Edwards-Teasley made a jumper off the glass, Weisner scored a bucket, Deven Hunter hit a jumper of her own and Weisner made a pair of free throws all before Oregon's Amanda Delgado got her team on the board with a long-range bomb.
OSU would grow its first-half lead to as large as 14, 24-10, when Mollee Schwegler knocked down two free throws at the 7:30 mark, but Oregon closed the half on a 16-5 run to bring themselves back within striking distance at the break, down just three points, 29-26.
For the first eight minutes of the second half, the Beavers' lead hovered around the seven to nine points, until a Siegner layup with 12:00 on the clock sparked a 21-5 OSU run over the next nine minutes.
During the spurt, the Beaver tandem of Siegner and Gibson scored 14 of Oregon State's 21 points while the team's defense shuttered any hope of a Ducks' comeback. Oregon went just 2-for-17 from the floor during the Beavers' run and made only six shots in the entire second half (6-for-30).
On the afternoon, the Beavers shot 47.2 percent (25-for-53) to Oregon's 25.8 percent (16-for-62). In Oregon State's five-game winning streak against the Ducks, OSU's defense has allowed its opponent to only convert over a quarter of its field goal attempts, as Oregon is just 93-for-328 during the quintet of games (28.4 percent).
The Beavers also were able to share the ball better than they had all year in this Civil War, racking up 19 assists on their 25 made baskets and topping their previous season-best of 17 assists against Sacramento State on Dec. 1.
Additionally, Oregon State's posts soundly controlled things inside in the wire-to-wire win. The Beavers outscored Oregon 36-12 in the paint and held the Ducks' statistical leader, forward Jillian Alleyne, to just six points and eight rebounds. UO's freshman came in averaging 13.1 rebounds per game, good for third in the country, and 14.8 points per game, which ranked seventh in the Pac-12.
Alyssa Martin scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists. She also made one three-pointer to take over sole possession of fourth place on Oregon State's all-time list with 114.
The Beavers will hit the road for two games next weekend, playing at Washington on Friday at 6 p.m. and at Washington State next Sunday at 1 p.m. Neither game will be televised, but both will be streamed live through each school's respective Pac-12 portal.
