STANFORD, Calif. - The Oregon State women's basketball team got 12 points from freshman Jamie Weisner to go along with six rebounds and three blocks from fellow first-year player Ruth Hamblin, but a double-double from Chiney Ogwumike propelled #4 Stanford over the Beavers on Friday night in Maples Pavilion, 90-53.
Stanford (25-2, 14-1 Pac-12) scored seven of the game's first nine points to jump out to an early 7-2 lead with almost three minutes gone. An Alyssa Martin jumper at the 16:18 mark began a 7-0 Oregon State (9-18, 3-12) run which gave the Beavers a 9-7 advantage with 13:56 on the clock, their only lead of the game.
During that stretch, OSU held Stanford scoreless for nearly 3:30, but after Oregon State got to within 12-11 at the 12:20 mark in the first half, Stanford used a 16-4 run to pull away and couldn't seem to miss the rest of the way.
The Beavers shot 2-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half, missing six of their first seven. But they crashed the boards for 11 first-half offensive rebounds and held a 22-21 edge in the opening 20 minutes. The Cardinal wound up with a 46-34 rebounding advantage.
Stanford ended the opening period with a 39-21 edge on the scoreboard after shooting 40 percent (12-for-30) while holding the Beavers to 26.5 percent (9-for-34). That number only improved for the Cardinal in the second.
Stanford converted more than half of its attempts from the floor in the second half, making 20 of its 36 overall (55.6%), including eight of 15 from behind the arc. The Cardinal coupled that proficiency from deep with a paint presence that saw them outscore the Beavers down low, 30-16.
Weisner led Oregon State in scoring for the 11th time this season and had her 18th game in double figures scoring. Hamblin had her first three-block contest since she swatted four of Cal State Fullerton's shots on Dec. 13.
Ogwumike paced Stanford with 19 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 11 made free throws.
"They have a superstar inside. We did a decent job slowing her down," Oregon State coach Scott Rueck said. "I thought we got decent looks to be honest, we just didn't make them. The second half turned into a shooting drill ... [but] I think you learn from every loss."
On the night, Stanford shot 48.5 percent (32-for-66) while Oregon State managed to convert at a 32.4 percent (22-for-68) clip. The Cardinal also went 10-for-22 (45.5%) from deep and 16-for-18 (88.9%) from the line.
The Beavers are back in action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they take on #6 California in a game televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
