Oregon State goes 2-4 on the first day of competition during the Stanford Invite
REWOOD CITY, Calif. - The 20th ranked Oregon State men's rowing team completed first day competition at the Stanford Invite by taking two of three versus Orange Coast College and Santa Clara in the morning session and finishing 2-4 overall for the day, following afternoon races versus No. 11 Wisconsin.
The Beavers finished first in the Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ races versus OCC and Santa Clara, but then dropped their Freshmen 8+ race by less than a second to Orange Coast. OSU crossed the finish line in six minutes flat in the Frosh 8+, just seven tenths of a second behind Orange Coast's boat.
The first two races of the morning were not as close as the last, with OSU finishing in 5:59.4 to OCC's 6:07.4) in the Varsity 8+ and 6:15.4 to OCC's 6:28.3 in the 2nd Varsity 8+.
"The morning session went well for OSU, our boats put together solid races with the varsity and junior varsity coming through with wins in their races," said Head Coach Steve Todd. "The Freshmen fought hard with Orange Coast and put out a great effort but came up inches short."
The afternoon's races proved to be a tough test for the 20th ranked `Beavs as they took to the water against No. 11 Wisconsin. The Badgers grabbed first place finishes in all-three races, with OSU's fastest time coming in the Varsity 8+ at 5:57.6.
"Wisconsin out rowed us in the afternoon session, but it gave the guys a good idea of what needs to happen tomorrow to race well versus Santa Clara and Stanford," Todd added.
Oregon State will as Todd said be back on the water Sunday morning versus Santa Clara and California in the Varsity 8+, Freshmen 8+ and JV 8+, followed by afternoon races with No. 7 Stanford in the Varsity 8+, Freshmen 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+.
The morning session begins at 9 a.m. out at Redwood Shores, while the afternoon session kicks off at 1 p.m. for OSU.
