Another close race with UBC highlights the final day of competition at the 40th annual classic on Mission Bay
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State men's rowing team completed competition at the 40th annual San Diego Crew Classic by placing third, fourth and fifth during three Grand Final races, Sunday morning on Mission Bay.
The OSU JV8+ boat, with senior Ty Louis riding in stroke and sophomore Nick Aerne in bow, crossed the finish line in 6:13.96, good enough for third place in the event and less than two second ahead of fourth place British Columbia (6:15.44). That same boat finished first in their heat on Saturday with a 6:22.05 time, guaranteeing them a spot in the Grand Final. Like Sunday's race, Saturday's was also a close one, with OSU crossing the finish line by a little more than two seconds ahead of the Thunderbirds'.
Oregon State's Freshmen 8+ boat finished in fourth place of the Grand Final, ahead of Gonzaga and UC Santa Barbara. That boat was led by Bobby Vernazza in stroke and Verrill Beaudro in bow, and finished with a 6:24.31 time.
The Beavers' Varsity 8+ boat crossed the finish line of their Grand Final with a 6:05.42 time in fifth place, more than a half dozen seconds ahead of sixth place Gonzaga.
OSU will head back up I-5 following their weekend in SoCal to host their one and only home race of the year, as head coach Steve Todd's team will take on Washington, Saturday, April 13 on Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore.
