LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - The Oregon State men's rowing team finished fourth at the Pac-12 Championships Sunday morning for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. The Beavers' Varsity Four and Freshman Eight raced to bronze medal finishes while two other OSU boats finished fourth.
The men's 48 team points were just two shy of third-place Stanford and matched the Beavers' point total from 2012. The Washington crews, ranked No. 1 in the nation, won the three out of four races at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center on windy day on the waters of Lake Natoma.
"The young guys in the Freshman Eight and Varsity Four performed well today," head coach Steve Todd said. "Those were really solid races. The freshmen faced a tough challenge with two boats way out ahead of them and then also being comfortably ahead of the rest of the pack. It's tough to keep the intensity when you're racing by yourself. It was similar for the V4, they had to stay focused internally and not worry about the rest of the field."
For the Beavers, the crew of the V4+ was nearly identical to last year's bronze medalists with the only new face in the boat being Chase Hooper. The rest of the V4+ was Sam Callen (coxswain), Hooper, Clark Fisher, Andrew Satterlee and Nick Aerne and turned in a time of 7:07.5. The N8 crew of Mac Myers (coxswain), Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Dominic DeCarlo, Loren Connett, Taylor Heen, Aidan Daly-Jensen, Alec Martin and Verrill Beaudro finished in 6:19.7.
In the first 500 meters of the V4+ race, California and Washington jumped out to a big lead while OSU grabbed a full-length lead on Stanford and Washington State for third place. None of the top three boats ever looked back and the Beavers finished more than 15-seconds ahead of the fourth place boat.
The F8 race played out similarly to the V4+ with Washington and California battling for first from the start with the Beavers establishing a four-second lead on the Stanford, Colorado and WSU boats, which battled for fourth place throughout the race. OSU finished 10-seconds ahead of Colorado for third place.
In the final race of the day, the Beavers' V8 finished fourth for the seventh consecutive year with a time of 6:19.3 finishing ahead of Washington State and Colorado. They finished behind Washington (5:51.6), Stanford (5:57.0) and California (5:57.6) whose crews were ranked No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 entering the day.
The Beavers' JV8 also came in fourth (6:20.1) while their V4+ and N8 both earned bronze medals after third-place finishes.
"It was windy all day but it seemed like the conditions picked up later in the morning when the Varsity and JV raced and we didn't deal with it as well as we could have," Todd said. "There was good effort and intensity and I'm happy about that. We'll hope for better conditions at IRAs."
The Beavers will find out officially whether they will race again at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) national championships when the field is announced Tuesday.
