Anica Yoo Leads Beavers Through 18 Holes
October 08, 2014 | Women's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. – A day that was supposed to feature 36 holes and start at 8 a.m. was delayed more than four hours and shortened to one round, which caused the scores to be higher than expected at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Tuesday.
The Oregon State women's golf team moved up the leaderboard over the final holes on the opening round, posting a 15-over 303 at the par-72, 6,039-yard Sahalee Country Club, to sit in a tie for eighth place in the 12-team field.
The final 36 holes will be played on Wednesday, if the weather cooperates, and Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo expects the Beavers to continue their climb up the standings in their third tournament of the fall season
"Today was a day of dealing with adversity with the delays,” Chergo said. “We are in a position to improve tomorrow and compete and to continue to improve as a group."

Senior Anica Yoo showed her experience and leadership on a day the players had to sit around waiting for the fog to clear by carding a team-best 1-over 73. She started on the 10th hole and had a clean card going out with nine straight pars before slipping a bit coming in with three bogeys. The veteran responded with birdies on the par-4 seventh and eight holes to put her in a tie for 11th place and great position for a top-10 finish.
Oregon State's juniors who are competing, Ashlee Pickerell and Chelsea Saelee, each shot a 4-over 76 to sit in a tie for 30th place. Pickerell had two birdies, dropping putts on the par-4 third and par-5 11th holes, while Saelee had her lone tweet on the par-3, 165-yard 17th hole.
The adversity that Chergo mentioned showed for the Beavers' freshmen as Hannah Swanson shot a 6-over 78 and Haley Nist finished with a 10-over 82.
Host Washington was the only team to finish in red figures, firing a 3-under 285, to lead by nine strokes over Gonzaga (6-over 294) and 11 better than Stanford (8-over 296). Colorado, the other Pac-12 team in the field, is tied with the Beavers for eighth place with a 15-over 303.
Four players fired sub-par rounds on the opening day, including three golfers competing for the Huskies, led by SooBin Kim who shot a 3-under 69.
