Beavers Gobble Up Bulldogs
November 28, 2014 | Women's Basketball
LAIE, Hawaii – It was a holiday game, and the Beavers had plenty to be thankful for, as the No. 19/20 Oregon State women's basketball team hit 15 three-pointers on their way to an 85-53 win over Butler at the Tom Weston Classic in Laie, Hawaii. The victory was the Beavers' fourth-straight to open the season, with all four wins coming by 20 points or more.
Senior Ali Gibson finished with 20 points, as she shot 7-for-10 from the floor, 5-for-7 from downtown. The contest marked the fifth time Gibson has scored 20 points in her career, and her five long-balls tied a career-high.
As a team, Oregon State shot 53.4 percent (18-for-28) from beyond the arc, including 11-for-16 in the first half.
“It was a great start for us today,” said head coach Scott Rueck. “The team really shot the ball well, and in order to do that you have to move the ball well. We had great vision, and we played inside out. We found open shooters in transition and in the half-court. It was nice to see Ali get going early, and the guards shot the ball really well as a group.”
Sophomore Sydney Wiese finished with 19 points, four assists and career-high tying five steals. She shot 7-for-9 in the contest, 5-for-7 from three-point range. With her five long-balls, Wiese passed Sage Indendi to move into fifth on Oregon State's career three-pointers list with 124. Junior Jamie Weisner rounded out a trio of Beavers in double-figures, scoring 13 points to go with a game-high five assists and four rebounds.
Junior Samantha Siegner led Oregon State on the boards with nine rebounds, as the Beavers pulled down 43 boards, compared to 31 for the Bulldogs (0-6). Freshman Marie Gülich tallied eight rebounds.
Oregon State shot 55.4 percent in the contest (31-for-56), and outscored Butler 28-16 in the paint. The Beavers' defense suffocated the Bulldogs all night, holding Butler to just 29.3 percent (17-for-58) from the floor, 20 percent (6-for-30) in the second half. Junior transfer Jen'Von'Ta Hill recorded her first career block, coming up with an emphatic rejection midway through the closing frame.
The Beavers opened the game on fire from downtown, with six of their first seven baskets coming from long range as they jumped out to an early 20-8 lead. The three-point barrage continued throughout the half, as Oregon State knocked down 11 long balls, leading by as many as 26 before taking a 49-31 advantage into the break.
The Beavers' shooting cooled off a bit to start the second frame, but Gibson and Wiese responded with back-to-back threes to extend OSU's lead back to 24. Oregon State would not look back from there, stretching the lead to as many as 34 before taking the 32-point victory.
The Beavers will be back in action on Saturday when they close out the Tom Weston Invitational by taking on BYU.
