December 07, 2014 | Women's Basketball
The No. 17/18 Oregon State women's basketball team erupted for the second-most points in school history on Saturday in a 109-61 rout of Sacramento State at Gill Coliseum.
The win was Oregon State's 14th-straight at Gill Coliseum, a new school record, as the team finished calenday year 2014 undefeated at home.
"There's something about Gill Coliseum," said head coach Scott Rueck. "There's just a great vibe, a great feel. The team plays very well here and we have a great relationship with our fans. There is just a good mojo in there and so there is a relentlessness with which this team plays."
It was the most points scored by the Beavers in 32 years, dating back to a 117-58 victory over Portland State on Jan. 8, 1982. OSU also matched its best start in school history (7-0) with its school-record 16th consecutive regular-season win.
Junior forward Deven Hunter led a parade of six Beavers in double figures by scoring a career-high 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting. She added 11 rebounds and five assists for her fourth career double-double.
Junior center Ruth Hamblin added 18 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double in seven games. She also blocked five shots and now needs 12 more rejections to break Brina Chaney's (2001-04) school record of 208.
Sophomore guard Sydney Wiese hit 5-of-6 3-pointers, scored 17 points and dished out seven assists. Junior guard Jamie Weisner had 16 points and six assists; sophomore center Kolbie Orum had 11 points and senior guard Ali Gibson added 10.
The Beavers set a school record with 40 assists on 45 baskets and outrebounded the Hornets (1-5) 63-42. All seven wins this season have been by 10 or more points; OSU is 21-3 in its last 24 games and every victory was by double figures.
OSU never trailed, led 60-23 at halftime and built the margin to 54 points at its zenith in hitting the century mark for the third time in its last four games against the Hornets. Everyone who played scored and junior forward Samantha Siegner, sophomore guard Gabriella Hanson and junior guard Jen 'Von 'Ta Hill all added five assists off the bench as seven players had five or more assists.
The Beavers are now idle until a Dec. 16 matchup at North Carolina, the first in a six-game road trip. Their next home game is Jan. 9, 2015, against Oregon.
