Beavers Push Past Pilots In OT
December 07, 2014 | Men's Basketball
PORTLAND, Ore. – Victor Robbins scored a career-high 18 points and Gary Payton II registered his third consecutive double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, as Oregon State took down Portland in overtime, 65-58, at the Chiles Center on Saturday night.
After being down as much as seven in the second half, Oregon State (5-2) chipped away at Portland (6-2) and forced overtime.
In the extra period, the Beavers would take advantage of strong free throw shooting (10-for-10) and hustle on the defensive end to put away the Pilots.
“I am extremely proud," Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "We knew it was going to be a knuckle buster. We weren't focusing on the game plan and for whatever reason we were in a fog, but our guys found a way to just keep grinding.
"They fed off of each other and guys made timely plays down the stretch from one guy to the next. I'm really proud of the guts we showed and we found a way to get it done. When we got to overtime, we knocked down some big shots and finally got some stops.
"It wasn't a thing of beauty, but against a tough and physical team this a great lesson for us on the road as we build this thing.”
Robbins was electric for OSU, going 8-for-17 from the field and grabbing four boards for the Beavers.
"He was tired, and some of our other guys were too because it was a battle, but boy he stepped it up when we needed him most," Tinkle said of Robbins.
Payton II continued his stat-stuffing, double-double streak, hitting 3-of-7 from the floor and going 6-for-6 from the stripe.
Olaf Schaftenaar also played well, posting a career-high 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting, and going 3-for-6 from downtown.
Langston Morris-Walker tied a career-high with 16 points (5-for-12), grabbed six boards and went 6-for-6 from the line, giving OSU a much-needed offensive presence in the second half.
The Beavers were able to limit the Pilots to a measly 27.3 percent shooting performance, as they applied pressure on the perimeter and maintained a physical presence inside that Portland could not overcome.
Portland was led by three-point specialist Bobby Sharp, as he tallied 12 points on 3-of-13 shooting. Alec Wintering also contributed, adding 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
In the first frame, Schaftenaar drilled a 3-ball from the top of the arc at 5:45 that tied the physical contest at 19.
Going into the locker room at the half, Portland held a 30-24 advantage, despite being held to a 29 percent shooting clip (7-for-24).
Oregon State would bring it within three, 33-30, at the beginning of the final period, as Morris-Walker got a layup to fall under the hoop at the 16:27 mark.
Portland would find its lead cut to 41-39 with just over 10 minutes remaining after Schaftenaar banged his third triple of the evening.
The Beavs would claim their first lead of the second half, 45-44, as Morris-Walker slid past his defender and got a tough lay-in to drop with just over six minutes to play. Soon after, Morris-Walker hit a jump shot at 5:42 that extended the Oregon State lead to three, 47-44.
Portland would answer with a corner 3-ball that tied the game at 47 with five minutes remaining.
Robbins came up clutch with a layup that tied the game once again with only 1:42 to go in the highly competitive battle. On the next possession, Robbins continued the magic, floating in a jumper that that gave OSU a 53-51 edge.
The Pilots would answer on the other end, tying it up at 53 with less than thirty seconds remaining. Payton II narrowly missed a buzzer beating 3-ball in the final moments of regulation and the game headed to overtime.
The overtime period featured much of the same physical back and forth play as the first two periods, as it was tied up at 57 with 2:30 left.
Oregon State took advantage of physicality inside and strong free throw shooting late to close the door on the Pilots at the Chiles Center.
Coming up, the Beavers are set to face off with Mississippi State next Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1:00 p.m. in a game televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
