Beavers Wrap Up Racing at Pac-12 Challenge
April 20, 2015 | Men's Rowing
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The No. 17 Oregon State men's rowing team put together a solid day of racing against tough competition Sunday to close out the Pac-12 Challenge.
The Beavers' Varsity 8 raced against a quad crew from the California Rowing Club, which is training for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Oregon State shot off the line and held with the CRC crew through 1,000 meters but couldn't sustain the pace. OSU's crew of Spencer Smith, Martin Forde, Tyler MacDonald, Collin Griffitts, Jesse Maritz, Kyle Wilkins, Baxter Call and Grant Van Kampen with Ben Augeri as the coxswain, finished with a time of 6:06.6.
“The first race (V8) was a great experience for the guys since they were racing the best rowers in the country who are training for the Rio Olympics,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said.
The Third Varsity 8 was challenged by a tough crew from California. The 3V8 of Sasha Kosek, Michael Jagielski, Austin Erickson, Taylor Heen, Dulude, Henry Stout, Clark Fisher and Nathan Smith and coxed by Ercoli Crugnale, rowed to a second place finish with a time of 6:10.6.
“In the 3V, we knew coming in that Cal is one of the best teams in the country and their depth showed but I'm proud of such a strong race against them.”
OSU's Varsity 4+ boat, coxed by Eric Sumner and crewed by Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Henry Prosser and Aidan Daly-Jensen, had a close race with Cal, covering the course in a time of 6:27.1 coming in eight-tenths of a second behind.
“The four race against Cal was fantastic, but we came up short in the end of a very intense race. I think they will learn a lot from a race that comes down to an eighth of a second. This just adds to their motivation. They were so close to stealing one from Cal.”
The Beavers race again next Sunday, April 26 when they host California at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, Wash.
