BOULDER, Colo. – Senior Anica Yoo fired a 1-under 70 in the opening round of the Pac-12 Championship on Monday to help the Oregon State women's golf team sit in seventh place through 18 holes at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Oregon State played sensational on the front nine, shooting a 2-over 142, and got as high as second on the leaderboard, but the Beavers were unable to find the same magic on the back with an 8-over 152 to finish the day with a 10-over 294 at the par-71, 6,437-yard Boulder Country Club.
Oregon leads the 11-team field with an even-par 284, while Stanford is second with a 2-over 286 and UCLA is third with a 3-over 287. No. 1 USC is only a stroke ahead of the Beavers with a 9-over 293.
Oregon State's best-ever finish at the Pac-10/12 Championship was sixth place in 1992. The Beavers finished ninth last year when they hosted the tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. The Beavers will start at 10 a.m. on the 10th hole and be paired with Colorado.
“Dawn (Shockley) and I are glad to have the first day in the books,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “The greatest thing about the first day is putting something up where you can settle in and golf the rest of the week.
“As poorly as we played at times, I think we are pleased that we are right in the mix. There's so much good to come of this team. We learned a lot about this golf course today. We are so happy with how hard every single player, one through five, played for the university and the golf program and their coaches and their teammates.
“It was fun. We probably had 50 Beaver fans out there with all of their Oregon State gear on cheering us on. It made it a special day and will make it a special week.
