Beavers Third at Pac-12 Championships
May 17, 2015 | Men's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Three crews from the No. 14 Oregon State men's rowing team medaled as the Beavers finished third overall at the Pac-12 Championships Sunday morning on the waters of Lake Natoma.
“The guys all put it out on the water and we achieved one of our goals today and that was to finish third as a team,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “It was a great Pac-12 regatta with three eights coming home with medals. That's the most we've ever hard.”
With three out of four crews finishing ahead of Stanford, Oregon State outscored the Cardinal 50-49 earn a third overall finish.
OSU's Second Varsity 8 got out to a strong start pulling ahead of Stanford by four full seconds by the 1,000-meter mark and held on maintaining the lead to finish third with a time of 6-minutes, 16.36-seconds to the Cardinal's 6:21.18.
In the Third Varsity 8 it was much the same story with the Beavers taking 4-second lead on Stanford at the halfway point. But the Orange and Black crew pushed forward in the late stages to beat the Cardinal by nearly 7 seconds, 6:28.62-6:35.13.
In the final race of the regatta, Oregon State's V8 sat in third through 1,500 meters just ahead of Stanford, but the Beavers ran out of game and a late sprint by the Stanford crew pushed the Cardinal to third, 6:06.87-6:09.23.
“There is nothing to feel bad about that, but you need to learn from it,” Winkler said. “When the guys come off of the water and it's hard to lift the boat, you know that they are spent.”
In the Novice 8, OSU easily rowed to third place with a time of 6:31.70 finishing ahead of Washington State (6:36.05) and Colorado (6:51.65).
No. 2 Washington swept the men's regatta beating the field, including No. 1 California in each race.
The Beavers await their postseason fate as the field to the IRA (Intercollegiate Rowing Association) Championships will be announced early next week.
