January 08, 2016 | Women's Swimming
TUCSON, Ariz. – Sammy Harrison seized a first-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle to lead the Oregon State swimming team in a four-team meet hosted by Pac-12 foe Arizona at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
The Henderson, Nev. native clocked a time of 17:08.13 to earn her second victory in the event this season, edging Arizona's Emma McCarthy by two seconds.
The senior's win in the 1,650 was her 20th overall individual victory of the season, marking only the 16th time in school history that an OSU swimmer has recorded 20 or more individual wins in a single season. Harrison had won 20 or more individual races in a single season twice previously (program-record 32 in 2015, 20 in 2014), and is one of only seven athletes in OSU history to accomplish that feat.
Harrison added a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing the race in 5:04.01. This marks the first time this season she has not won the 500, as she entered Friday's meet with wins in all eight of her previous attempts this season.
As a team, Oregon State fell to each of Arizona (196-76), Northern Arizona (198.5-94.5) and New Mexico State (188-105).
Czsarina Isleta turned in a pair of solid performances in each breaststroke event, placing third in the 100 (1:05.77) and fifth in the 200 (2:23.42). Isleta added a third-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:11.88), while Andrea Young rounded out a solid showing by OSU in the event by placing fourth (2:12.14).
The Beavers also put together a pair of top-five performances in the relay events. Amani Amr, Isleta, Claire McLaggan and Young combined to open the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:50.36), while the foursome of Sophie MacEwan, Constance Toulemonde, Anni Hecker and McLaggan closed the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:41.39).
The Oregon State swimming team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 for its final home meet of the season. The Beavers will host Willamette and SWOCC in the Stevens Natatorium at the Dixon Recreation Center at noon PT, with the meet designated as this season's Senior Day.
