PEORIZ, Ariz. – The Oregon State women's golf team posted the second-best single-round score in school history at the Westbrook Spring Invitational on Sunday.
The Beavers carded a 3-under 285 in the morning round at the par-72, 6,269-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club to hold the team lead through 18 holes. After a 10-over 298 in the afternoon, Oregon State is in eighth place in the 15-team field with a 7-over 583.
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. MT (7:30 a.m. PT) with a shotgun start and live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
The 3-under 285 by Oregon State is just the third round in red figures in program history. The school record is a 5-under 283 at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in the spring of 2014.
“I'm really proud of the way they went out there and played fearlessly,” Oregon State assistant coach Dawn Shockley said. “In the afternoon round we couldn't get as many putts to fall. The 36 holes is a grind, but we battled until the end. We are ready to get back out there tomorrow and battle back to the top.”
Seniors Ashlee Pickerell and Chelsea Saelee are each tied for 23rd place after posting a 1-over 145. Pickerell had a 1-under 71 in the morning and a 2-over 74 in the afternoon, while Saelee tied a career best with a 2-under 70 in the morning and a 3-over 75 after the lunch break.
Sophomore Haley Nist is tied for 30th with a 2-over 72-74--146, freshman Olivia Benzin is tied for 43rd with a 4-over 72-76--148 and sophomore Hannah Swanson is tied for 77th with an 11-over 80-75--155.
The 2-under 70 by Saelee, 1-under 71 by Pickerell and even-par scores of 72 by Nist and Benzin made up the Beavers' near-record morning round of 3-under 285.
