February 06, 2016 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 9 Oregon State women's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine consecutive games, recording a 61-53 victory over No. 24 Washington Friday evening at the Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Wash.
Senior Jamie Weisner reached yet another milestone in her collegiate career, scoring 21 points to go over 1,500 points in her career. The guard is the seventh player in Oregon State history to reach that mark and the 61st in Pac-12 history. Weisner finished the game 10-for-22 from the field and pulled down five rebounds.
“This was a great win for us,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “It's always good to win on the road in this conference. I thought it was an excellent defensive effort, and we made them work for everything they got. You don't want to give this team any momentum and I think we executed really well tonight.”
Junior Sydney Wiese scored 12 points and notched six rebounds, while senior Deven Hunter went for 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Sophomore Marie Gulich came off the bench to tally eight points, hitting four of her five shot attempts.
Senior Ruth Hamblin led the Beavers with nine rebounds, helping Oregon State hold an advantage on the glass for the 20th time in 22 games this season.
Oregon State jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Washington responded to level the score at seven apiece. The defenses would control the rest of the quarter, as the teams headed to the second period with the Beavers up 12-11.
Oregon State scored six-straight points to extend their lead to eight early in the second quarter. The Beavers would continue to build on the advantage from there, using an outstanding defensive effort to take a 31-17 edge into the intermission. OSU outscored the Huskies 16-6 in the second quarter.
The Beavers continued to extend the lead in the third quarter, using a pair of 3-pointers from Hunter to go ahead by 17 halfway through the period. Oregon State would proceed to lead by as many as 20 before Washington cut the edge to 12 heading into the final 10 minutes. The Huskies would make a push from there, but the Beavers remained in control to take the 61-53 win.
The game was part of the Northwest Rivalry Series, presented by Alaska Airlines.
The Beavers will return to action Sunday when they head to Pullman for a matchup with Washington State. That game will tip off at 11 a.m.
Four home games remain on Oregon State's regular-season schedule, including a Senior Day matchup with UCLA. Tickets for all Beaver home games are available at BeaverTickets.com or by calling 800-GoBeavs.
