March 08, 2016 | Women's Golf
Hannah Swanson birdied five holes on the back nine of the Meadow Club en route to even par 72 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team to the first round lead of the soggy 13-team Bay Area Intercollegiate.
Swanson, a native of Forest Grove, birdied three consecutive holes to finish the day tied for sixth, She is two strokes off the pace being set by Erin Harper of Indiana and Alexis Keating of Colorado.
The Beavers first round 7-over-295 leads a tightly bunched scoreboard with eight other teams within nine shots of OSU's pace.
“We battled really wet, rainy, tough conditions and multiple delays; I was very pleased with our competitive spirit this group showed,” OSU head coach Sammie Chergo said. “We still have room for improvement, but I feel like we are coming together as a team and building some nice momentum. Their overall hard work at home is translating to competition.”
OSU's Haley Nist carded four birdies for her round and is tied for 10th after a 73. Teammates Ashlee Pickerell is tied for 13th after a 74, Chelsea Saelee is tied for 25th following a 76 and Olivia Benzin is tied for 46th with a 79.
Numerous delays due to heavy rain Monday forced the originally scheduled 54-hole tournament to 36 holes, with the final round Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
