
Beavers Set For Match Play In Athens

ATHENS, Ga. – The Oregon State women's golf team will open match play against No. 1 Duke at the 44th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Saturday.
The Beavers finished Friday's stroke play with a 23-over 311 at the par-72, 6,307-yard University of Georgia Golf Course and will be in the “black” bracket with No. 1 Duke, No. 7 Arkansas and Auburn. The top eight teams from Friday's stroke play competition will be in the “orange” bracket and have a chance to win the team title.
Duke finished stroke play in a tie for ninth place with a 14-over 302.
There will be two rounds of match play on Saturday and one round of match play on Sunday. Live scoring and pairings are available at birdiefire.com.
The 12-team field features eight teams ranked in the top 14 in golfstat.com's rankings, including teams that have combined to win 13 of the past 16 NCAA Championships.
“We had a great opportunity today competing in one of the most premier events of the season against the best teams in the country,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “Unfortunately, we came up a little short.
“However, it was a great experience for our program to compete at this level and I am confident we will continue to gain momentum and learn from the day. Tomorrow we have the opportunity to play head-to-head match play against the No. 1 team in the country Duke. We are looking forward to the competition and continuing to grow.”
All five Oregon State golfers were within three strokes of each other, as sophomores Haley Nist and Hannah Swanson each fired a 5-over 77, freshman Olivia Benzin carded a 6-over 78, senior Ashlee Pickerell posted a 7-over 79 and senior Chelsea Saelee shot a 8-over 80.
Benzin, Pickerell, Saelee and Swanson all recorded a birdie during the stroke play competition.No. 3 UCLA has top seed for match play competition after posting a 2-under 286 on Friday. No. 6 Georgia is second, No. 5 Alabama is third, No. 2 USC is fourth and No. 4 Northwestern and Denver finished in a tie for fifth.
Only 10 of the 60 players finished in red figures, led by a 4-under 68 by Louise Ridderstrom of UCLA.
