Beavers Fourth at Pac-12 Championships
May 16, 2016 | Men's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif.—Two crews from the No. 19 Oregon State men's crew took third in the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday at Lake Natoma.
“We started the morning strong,” head coach Gabe Winkler said. “The third place finishes in the 3V and the Freshman 8 were impressive.”
OSU's Novice 8 had an impressive race to capture bronze. At the 1,000-meter mark the Beavers had a nearly six-second lead on Washington State and finished with a time of 6-minutes, 18.079, a full 12 seconds ahead of the fourth-place finishing Cougars.
In the Third Varsity 8 race, the Orange and Black crew outpaced Stanford by more than eight seconds in the first 1,000-meters. The Beavers went on to extend their lead to more than 18 seconds over the Cardinal, but just couldn't close the gap to second place California, taking third with a time of 6:04.632.
In the Second Varsity 8 race the Beavers were bow-to-bow with the Cardinal through the first 1,000 meters. However, Stanford surged with a late push to beat the Beavers 6:02.125-6:06.183.
The final race, of the regatta, OSU's V8 was trailed Stanford by just under five seconds at the 1000-meter mark. Oregon State closed the gap to fewer than two seconds but came up short earning fourth place with a time of 5:59.790.
“The Varsity should be proud of their race. Those guys didn't let Stanford go after a strong (Stanford) start.”
California dominated in three of four races to capture the Pac-12 title.
The Orange and Black wait to hear about their postseason fate as the field to the IRA (Intercollegiate Rowing Association) Championships will be announced early next week.
