Beavers Drop Season Opener in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — The Oregon State swimming team opened its 2016-17 season today at Salt Lake City with a tri-meet against Utah and BYU. The Beavers suffered losses to both opponents; 157-96 to Utah and 178-83 to BYU.

The Beavers started the meet with the 200-yard relay and finished third with a time of 1:46.13. Emma Osowski recorded a fifth place finish in the 1000-yard free with a mark of 11:30.56.

Felicia Anderson recorded her first win of her collegiate career in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.51, out-touching the next opponent by .23 of a second. Corrine Shigeta added to OSU's point total in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06 for a fourth place finish, missing third by just two-tenths of a second.

Sophie MacEwan swam a close race in the 50-yard freestyle, placing fifth with a touch of 24.61. Only .6 of a second separated the top-five finishes.

Anderson finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a touch of 2:07.39. Czsarina Isleta also placed high in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.03 for a third place mark.

In the 100-yard fly, Andrea Young touch the wall in 58.79 second to finish third. Brooke Meyer followed with a minute flat for sixth place.

The Beavers finished the meet with a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
"The first half of the meet I thought was good," said head coach Jennifer Buffin. "The team improved from the black and orange meet, which is what we were looking for and responded well in the competitive environment."

The Oregon State swimming team will return to Corvallis and host Pac-12 Conference foe, California on Friday, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m., at the Osborn Aquatic Center.
