Murphy Stays Hot In First Round At Stanford
March 30, 2017 | Men's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – Kevin Murphy continued his hot streak with an even-par 70 in the opening round of The Goodwin on Thursday.
Â
The Oregon State men's golf team got off to a great start in a competitive 24-team field and sits in a tie for sixth place after the first round with a 9-over 289 at the par-70, 6,727-yard Stanford Golf Course.
Â
Four ranked teams are among the five ahead of Oregon State through 18 holes, but No. 5 Oregon is seven strokes behind the Beavers and in a tie for 13th place after shooting a 16-over 296.
Â
No. 12 and host Stanford is first with a 4-under 276, No. 36 Washington is second with a 3-over 283, SMU is third with a 4-over 284, No. 1 USC is fourth with a 5-over 285 and No. 44 BYU is fifth with an 8-over 288. No. 15 UNLV is tied with the Beavers in sixth place with a 9-over 289.
Â
Oregon State started in the morning and held the team lead before the 12 teams in the afternoon teed off.
Â
"The conditions were cold, windy and tough today to start this morning and our guys responded well," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "Our goal is to take care of our wave of teams. We accomplished the goal today and need to continue it tomorrow and then figure out what we need to do after 36 holes."
Â
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Oregon State will start at 12:26 p.m. on the 10th hole and be paired with Cal Poly and UC Davis.
Â
Murphy, a senior from Rogue River, Ore., had two birdies and two pars to finish at even par and put him in a tie for 11th place after the opening round. He finished in a tie for seventh place at the Duck Invitational earlier this week.
Â
He's only four strokes out of the lead in a field that features 126 golfers with only 10 shooting in red figures on the first day.
Â
"Kevin played so well from start to finish," Reehoorn said. "He's not happy with a couple of mistakes toward the end of his round, but his game is really good right now. More important, his confidence continues to grow."
Â
Junior Jonas Liebich also played well on a windy day on The Farm, shooting a 1-over 71 with an eagle on the par-5, 539-yard seventh hole and a birdie on the par-3, 185-yard 17th hole to lift him into a tie for 18th place.
Â
Sophomore Trevor Yu shot a 3-over 73 and freshman Shawn Lu carded a 5-over 75 for the Beavers' scoring on the opening day.
