Beavers Post Record Score At NCAA Regionals
May 10, 2017 | Women's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Oregon State women's golf team shattered a school record and finished ahead of seven ranked teams at the NCAA Regionals on Wednesday, but narrowly missed out on advancing to the NCAA National Championships.
The Beavers finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 13-over 306-293-278--877 at the par-71, 6,593-yard Rawls Course, just two strokes behind Kent State for sixth place.
The top six teams at each NCAA Regional advance to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Nationals.
It was an outstanding tournament for first-year head coach Dawn Shockley and the Beavers. They were in 13th place after the first day, moved up to 10th after the second day and had a record-breaking round on the final day. Some of the highlights:
Junior Susie Cavanagh was one of the top three individuals not on a qualifying team and earned a trip to the Nationals, which will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms, in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The transfer from Connecticut fired a career-best 4-under 68 in the final round to finish in a tie for ninth place with a 1-under 76-71-68--215. Her previous best 54-hole score was a 4-over 220 at the Rose City Collegiate where she finished in a career-best tie for eighth.
Cavanagh is just the third Oregon State women's golfer to advance to Nationals as an individual, joining All-American Kathleen Takaishi in 1999 and Anica Yoo in 2015.
Olivia Benzin capped a sensational sophomore season with a tie for 13th place after posting a 1-over 76-72-69--217. She had seven sub-par rounds, four top-10 finishes and six top-15 finishes, including a career-best tie for fourth place at the Pat Lesser-Harbottle Invitational this past fall.
Senior Elyse Smidinger played a spectacular final round, firing a 3-under 69, to move 23 spots up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 45th with a 9-over 78-78-69--225. After transferring to OSU from the University of Denver, Smidinger had to sit out last year. She made the best out of her one season in Corvallis with five sub-par rounds, including a program-record 5-under 67 at the Rose City Collegiate.
True freshman Nicole Schroeder carded a pair of even-par 72's in the final two rounds to finish in a tie for 41st place with an 8-over 80-72-72--224 and junior Hannah Swanson finished in a tie for 76th place with a 17-over 76-79-78--233.
Arizona (22-under 842), Furman (1-under 863), Oregon (3-over 867), Texas (5-over 869), Texas Tech (9-over 873) and Kent State (11-over 875) are the six teams to advance to NCAA Nationals.
Julienne Soo of Oklahoma (3-under 213) and Alex White of BYU (1-under 215) joined Cavanagh as the other two individuals to qualify for the National Championships.

- Seventh place is Oregon State's best-ever finish at NCAA Regionals, bettering a 10th-place mark in 2001 and a tie for 10th in 1998.
- Oregon State finished ahead of seven ranked teams, including No. 2 UCLA.
- The 10-under 278 in the final round crushed the single-round school record of 5-under 283, set at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in the spring of 2014.
