Beavers Edged in First Match In Denton

Mary-Kate Marshall finished with a team-leading 11 kills
DENTON, Texas – Mary-Kate Marshall tallied 11 kills and Haylie Bennett finished with eight but the Oregon State volleyball lost in three sets to North Texas Friday night at the North Texas Volleyball Center.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-22.

The match was the first of the North Texas Challenge for the Beavers, who will now set their sights on two matches Saturday. Oregon State takes on Campbell at 11 a.m. PT before playing New Orleans at 3 p.m.

Marshall finished with a team-leading 11 kills, marking her seventh consecutive effort with double-digit kills this season. She attempted a team-high 34 attacks, adding two assists, three digs, a service ace and a block.

Bennett, meanwhile, picked up eight kills on 15 attacks – a .400 hitting percentage – with two blocks, helping the Beavers to five overall. North Texas, meanwhile, finished with seven and had 41 digs to 33 for the Beavers.

Maddie Goings finished with nine of Oregon State's 33 digs, with Kayla Ellis tallying eight.

The Beavers (6-1 overall) hit .255 as a team to North Texas' (6-1) .343. Oregon State hit .435 in the third set, but was unable to overcome North Texas' early start, which included a 12-5 lead. The Beavers eventually moved to within seven at 21-14 and then three, at 22-19 – after a kill by Bennett. But North Texas managed to score three of the match's final six points to secure the win.

Match Notes: Marshall's 11 kills moved her to 1,497 for her career … she is now 58 kills from moving into sole possession of third at Oregon State … Kylee McLaughlin led the Beavers in assists with 22 – she has 246 on the year, which puts her 146 away from moving into the top 10 in a single-season for freshmen … McKenna Hollingsworth made her first appearance of the season, finishing with a kill and three assists in two sets.
