Volleyball Falls to Utah in SLC

SALT LAKE CITY – Oregon State dropped the final match of opening weekend 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) to Utah on Sunday afternoon at the Huntsman Center. Â

AC Froehlich led the Beavers with 13 kills and recorded eight digs. Ivana Cvetkovic hit .500 with five kills to lead the team in efficiency. Jackie Matias dished 26 assists to go with eight digs.

The Beavers were in touch deep into both the first and second set. In the first, OSU battled the Utes to a draw at 17-17 before Utah closed the set on an 8-2 run. The Beavers hit just .071 in the first. A bright spot came early with the service of Kama Goldstein, who paced the team through a 5-0 run while keeping Utah off balance.

In the second, Utah kept the Beavers at arm's length through the middle part of the set, but the Beavs closed the gap at 19-19 thanks to a block from Taray Tela and kills from Taylor Treahy and Froehlich. The Utes responded, however, with a 6-1 run and closed the frame with back-to-back-to-back aces.

Oregon State continued to fight in the third, using Goldstein's serving to jump out to a 3-0 lead and later taking a 16-13 advantage with kills from Treahy and Froehlich. Utah closed out the sweep thanks to an immediate 6-0 run, giving the Utes a lead they would not relinquish.

Oregon State returns home next week to host the Asics Invitational. The Beavers take on Cal Baptist on Thursday at 6 p.m. in their home opener.
