Tibbits, Lu Post Career-Best Finishes
March 27, 2018 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – Spencer Tibbits and Shawn Lu both recorded a career-best finish to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a tie for third place at the Duck Invitational on Tuesday.
Tibbits, a freshman from Vancouver, Wash., finished in fourth place with a steady 2-under 71-69-71--211. He had eight birdies over the three rounds and nothing worse than a bogey. His previous best finish was sixth place at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational this past fall.
Lu, a sophomore from Honolulu, Hawai'i, finished in a tie for fifth place with a 1-uner 75-67-70--212 to better the tie for 10th he posted as a freshman at the El Macero Classic. He dropped in a team-best 11 birdies, tied for the third most in the 88-player field.
"Spencer and Shawn ended up with career-best finishes in totally different ways," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "Spencer was consistent from start to finish with just six bogeys in 54 holes, while Shawn started with a round of 75 and then had two under-par rounds to finish."
The Beavers had their best finish of the season, a tie for third place, with a 17-over 298-282-289--869 at the par-71, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club.
"It was fun to be in contention and have a chance to win a golf tournament," Reehoorn said. "We got off to a slow start and were probably feeling the nerves a bit. But it was fun to see them respond so positively. In the past I'm not sure that would have happened."
Liberty and Oregon shared the team title with a 13-over 865 and Santa Clara tied Oregon State for third with a 17-over 869. Norman Xiong of Oregon claimed medalist honors with an 11-under 202.
Sophomore Kyosuke Hara improved his score by two strokes each round, finishing with a 9-over 76-74-72--222 for a tie for 31st place.
Junior Trevor Yu finished in 68th place with an 18-over 83-72-76--231 and freshman Keaton Gudz shot a 21-over 76-75-83--234 for a tie for 74th.
Alec Berrey, a freshman from Corvallis, Ore., competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 77th with a 23-over 84-75-77--236.
The Beavers have one day off before competing Thursday through Saturday at The Goodwin in San Francisco, Calif.
"We've got some good momentum going and the confidence is building," Reehoorn said. "With our best tournament of the year I'm looking forward to keeping these guys on the road and heading to Stanford to build on the positive momentum."
