Schroeder Wins Individual Title At NCAA Regionals
May 09, 2018 | Women's Golf
MADISON, Wis. – Nicole Schroeder won the individual title at the NCAA Division I Regionals on Wednesday and will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Â
The Oregon State women's golf finished in eighth place, and just five strokes out of the top six, to narrowly miss out on advancing. The Beavers concluded the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 4-over 289-285-294--868 at the par-72, 6,313-yard University Ridge Golf Course.
Â
Duke won the team title with a 14-under 850, while Virginia (5-under 859), USC (2-under 862), Arizona State (1-under 863), Ohio State (1-under 863) and Northwestern (even-par 864) finished in the top six to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships.
Â
Oregon State finished seventh at the NCAA Regionals in Lubbock, Texas last year.
Â
"This team has bought in all year and as their coaches it is extremely hard to see them come up just shy yet again," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "That's golf. It's a matter of inches. Credit to Ohio State and Northwestern for getting it done in the end. They are both great teams and it was fun battling all day with them.
Â
"The more we put ourselves in this position, the better we will be at closing the door. This group needs to hold their heads high and everyone in Beaver Nation should be proud of the way this team represented Oregon State."
Â
Schroeder fired a then-career best 4-under 68 in the first round, followed that with a program record-tying 6-under 66 in the second round and concluded the tourney with an even-par 72. Her 10-under 206 is the second-lowest three-round score in school history, and just one stroke off the record 11-under 205 Ellie Slama carded at the Ron Moore Invitational this past fall.
Â
A native of Rocklin, Calif., Schroeder became first Oregon State golfer to win the individual title at an NCAA Regional. She's the 18th Beaver in history to win a tournament and joins Slama who claimed medalist honors at the Ron Moore Invitational last October.
Â
Schroeder, who won by two strokes over Jaclyn Lee of Ohio State and Leona Maguire of Duke, earned a trip to the NCAA Championships for being one of the top three individuals not on a qualifying team.
Â
The NCAA Championships will be held May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Â
Schroeder is just the fourth Oregon State women's golfer to advance to Nationals as an individual, joining All-American Kathleen Takaishi in 1999, Anica Yoo in 2015 and Susie Cavanagh last year.
Â
"I could not be more proud of Nicole for coming out on top," Shockley said. "She proved she belongs with the best of them. She took control of her nerves and stayed in the moment.
Â
"I walked alongside her for 11 holes and was extremely proud of the way she manages her game and her emotions. As a coach your job is to prepare them the best you can. It was rewarding to watch Nicole put all of the things she has learned and execute her game plan perfectly.
Â
"Winning a tournament in golf is tough. Winning an NCAA Regional is downright impressive."
Â
Slama, a freshman from Salem, Ore., had her best round of the tournament on Wednesday to move 14 spots up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 30th place with a 2-over 75-72-71--218.
Â
Cavanagh finished in a tie for 54th place with a 7-over 75-73-75--223, while junior Olivia Benzin (72-76-76) and sophomore Mari Nishiura (74-74-76) both finished in a tie for 57th place with an 8-over 224.
