Brown Scores, but Beavers fall to Gonzaga
August 31, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Gonzaga takes the win, 3-1.
Corvallis – Freshman Helena Brown records her first goal as a Beaver in the 88th minute of play, but Oregon State falls to Gonzaga, 3-1.
"We started off a little slow and got punished for it," said head coach Linus Rhode. "We tried to fight our way back and had some decent moments in the second half. The second half was definitely a step in the right direction."
Gonzaga jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring both goals within the first 10 minutes of play.
The Beavers tried to battle back with McKenzie Weinert taking a shot at the 16 minute mark that was saved, and Toni Malone firing a shot on goal that went just over the goal. Oregon State got another chance on goal during the 34th minute when Malone took a free kick from 10 yards outside of Gonzaga's penalty box. She missed the top right corner of the goal by inches.
Oregon State came out firing in the second half as Taylor Lemmond made a cross-pass that deflected off the goalkeeper's hands. This was followed by a quick pass attempt from Brown to Kate Evans inside the box that the defense was able to grab.
Gonzaga extended their lead in the 68th minute from a cross-pass that was deflected right onto the feet of the scorer making it 3-0.
Brown scored her goal within the last minute and a half of play to cut Gonzaga's lead, 3-1.
Oregon State returns to action at home on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. as they play host to Dartmouth.
