Beavers Drop Match at No. 11 Washington
October 11, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
SEATTLE, Wash. – Junior Maddie Goings returned to form Friday night leading the OSU offense with nine kills, but the Beaver volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 11 Washington Friday night in OSU's first conference road test of the season.
The Beavers took the loss dropping their record to 8-8 overall and 2-3 in the league, while Washington improved to 12-3, 3-2. Set scores were 19-25, 16-25 and 16-25.
"Maddie Goings was really good tonight. She really turned things around from last week and her play is very important for us," head coach Mark Barnard said. "But Washington is a very good team and they are a really big team and it was just too much for us. We weren't bad on the attack but our passing was not good enough and put our setters in poor positions."
The Beavers opened the match about as perfectly as can be with Maddie Sheehan tallying an ace on the first serve of the game. Shortly after, OSU used back-to-back kills by Amy Underdown in the midst of a 4-0 run to open a lead at 10-5 and forced a Washington timeout. The Huskies came out of the break on a mission rolling over 14 of the next 18 points to go up 19-14. The teams swapped sideouts the rest of the way with UW hanging on to take the set, 25-19.
Underdown and Serena Bruin recorded the Beavers' first block of the match on the opening point of Set 2, but the Dawgs squirted out to a 9-6 lead. OSU briefly stemmed the tide with kills from Underdown, Bruin and Goings in short succession but once again UW used an 8-1 run to push out to a 20-11 lead. The Beavers traded sideouts the rest of the way with the Huskies winning the set, 25-16.
For the second time in the match the Beavers opened the scoring with an ace, this time by Montanna Gubrud. With the Beavers still leading 7-6 following a kill by Lindsey Schell, Washington used a 7-0 run to open a lead at 13-7. OSU responded with a kill by Haylie Bennett followed by back-to-back blocks by Bruin and Bennett and then Bruin and Chloe Brown to get back to within three at 13-10. The Huskies once again produced a quick 5-0 burst to go up 18-10 and rode it out from there to secure the set, 25-16, and match.
Game Notes: Maddie Goings, who struggled last weekend against California and Stanford, led the Beavers with nine kills and Chloe Brown added seven … Brown also collected a team-leading 11 digs while libero Grace Massey notched six … Serena Bruin led the defense at the net with four blocks, including three in the final set … the Beavers ran a two setter system for the second straight match with Montanna Gubrud and Maddie Sheehan running the offense. Gubrud registered 17 assists and Sheehan accumulated 13.
Next Up: Oregon State returns to action at noon on Sunday to face No. 24 Washington State in Pullman. The match will stream live on Pac-12 Plus.
